Update 25/06/13:
I was going to wait a few days to post this but some people (eLtrix) insisted they found out what this big surprise was ASAP.
After about a month of collecting parts and slowly working over the weekends to make ends meet, I'm please to announce, AS FAR AS I KNOW, I'm the first Australian DC5R owner to have retrofitted:
That's right. An S2000 AP1 cluster.
I got myself a used AP1 cluster from a bloke off the itr-dc5 forum over in the UK. They had a harness pre-wired and ready to go in the car. Sadly, after I received it and checked the wiring, the bloke had done it wrong and in turn, stuffed up the harness plugs. Stopped by an auto electrical guru and they quoted $600 + parts just to fix the wiring. Yeah, no. Asked my dad to do it and he finished it in about an hour without new parts. Having an engineer/ electrician by trade and an awesome dad is probably all I could ask for
The dc5r cluster has two main plugs and the AP1 has 4 so even with a conversion harness, some wires would have to be tapped from the ECU, MCU and even from the A/C panel.
The analogue signal to the DC5 cluster needed to be converted to a digital signal hence, the popular motorbike speedo modifier; speedhohealer was used. Also, the ECT signal needed to be adjusted since the gauge on the AP1 panel read on a difference scale to the DC5.
The wiring was in fact, the easy part of the install as the cluster was substantially smaller than the dc5 one which required a filling shround (manufactured by dad out of Aluminium). Cutting Al isn't simple especially if it's an intricate pattern. Lucky we had a tool. It slowly punches out small squares and essentially nibbles at the sheet. Took me a while to cut it all:
Dad gave a couple of coats of matte black and now looks absolute stealth.
Fitting it in required a couple of extra brackets and tedious measuring, bending, measuring bending, drilling. Even required dropping the steering wheel past the lever adjustment range (Pulling out a greasy bolt).
The speedohealer calibration value I used was +6100% (In comparison to the +3650% of that indicated on ClubRSX).
Overall, about 20-30 hours of labour since it was the first time fitting in something like this. I might start charging for this
Took a couple of drives in varying speed zones (40 kph, 60 kph, 90 kph) and I'm as happy as I can be with it now.
