So after today's meet I realise that I haven't posted here at all, just lurked. Which is probably why people were trying to work out who the old-fart was (or if I was there with my kids).
My background has been in Hondas for just over the last 3 decades from modified EB2 SBC Civics (too many) to the car I miss the most, my JDM EF9 import. Along the way I've owned TA22s, Datto 240Ks, a genuine SLR5000, a Statesman Deville, a '64 EH Holden and my current '85 E30 BMW daily driver.
After my EF9 had an altercation with a bus I couldn't find a Honda that matched it and swore off the brand altogether until I could buy one that matched or exceeded the EF - that's a tough call given the crappy low-spec Hondas that hit our shores.
Having put together some cash and with the discovery of more rust than I was prepared to deal with on the EH (never ever go looking for rust, especially behind the subframe), I picked up the E30 cheap and went looking for a good example of either a DC2R, an EP3 or a S15 R-Spec. Sadly, the Dcs were largely poorly modded, tired and worn examples, the S15s were a little better but either massive $$ for a low km version or too much for a 180k km variant and the stories never jelled with the car's level of wear (apparently no S15 has ever been driven over 4K rpm despite massive mods) . The EP3s were more than what I was prepared to pay and a few just felt average.
Which brings me to my new baby and the reason I get highly nervous in shopping centres. It's a low km '99 PY that was once on these forums. Mods left over from the previous owner are 16 inch JDM wheels, braided brake lines, brake stopper, rear strut brace, Tein coilovers (thank god as I had to raise the car to get it up the driveway), HKS grounding kit and modded airbox. It drives like a dream, is comfortable enough to take me and the kids to Victoria and back and almost as good as the EF9 in personality while far excelling it in terms of handling.
To date it's been off to a paintless dent remover to take out the few blemishes it had, had a ipod/USB compatible head unit installed and is serviced with Royal Purple every 3000 kms. New front tyres are on the to-do list as I've almost hit tread indicators, air-con compressor is being rebuilt this weekend, wheels are to be refurbished as they have a few chips on them and then off to have the chips in the bonnet fixed from interstate runs. Then it's off to a detailer as I havent got the patience to do it myself.
Other mods will be minimal as the E30 is going to be the heavily modded car - it's cheaper to go to an engine swap in that as opposed to sinking the same money into the DC2R - think 2JZ once I have the money together and the suspension/brakes/diff upgraded. For now I'm just enjoying the 'teg.
Enough backstory, on with the pics:
Ouch, I hate it when the odometer clocks over another 10K
Brake stopper - seems to work, the car stops
Grounding kit - seems to work as the car has no aspirations beyond its station and is very well grounded
Mandatory shakey-cam picture - next weekends job is to clean these right up and check the bushings etc.
I love toolkits that come with cars - not as cool as the hinge-down one attached to the inner boot of the E30... but it's still cool
Because I live in Sydney... that's why!!!!
Yep, the stereo is in the wrong spot, but tbh, I have the iphone/pod connector in the hutch above it - almost like Honda knew about iphone dimensions.
"The Office"
I HATE!!! white wheels!!!!!!!
Bloody things leak dust from the inside as soon as I clean them
Saturday 25/2... going to fix you guys:
The E30 wanted a mention:
How it spends some of its time (damn you Bosche electricals):
Cheers
Pete
