Finally put the Mugen baffled sump on. The original had been tapped for a turbo return line but when I checked the oil level I noticed the dipstick was dry (actually, there was 3 litres in the sump when I drained it).
Turns out the rubber "condom" blank had perished and oil was being forced out. Water line blanks and heat/oil = perished rubber. I got a similar one onto the car to get it to a garage (no hoist at home and I refuse to crawl under cars without one in my old age ).
Threw in the 10-30 Royal Purple and other than some oil having dripped on the exhaust it's all good.
Sumps for comparison:

Cleaned up the oil on the exhaust, tightened up the shifter to get rid of the buzz.
Clearance exhaust to sump is tight as is exhaust to shifter. Might need to get CHE to adjust it a tiny bit down.
Track day at Wakefield last week - didn't set the world on fire but didn't expect to either. The 86 was cooling his brakes after doing a 1:18, he got behind me and pushed me to try a bit harder. Learnt a lot about the car on the track and had fun. Next time I'll drive harder although I seemed to be on the close to the limiter a lot. Need to fix that.
I burnt a bit of oil - I think that's the last time I'll drop Royal Purple in. I ended up running on the Federale 595RSRs this time, next time I'll give the tyres I got off Tink a go.
John Boston's day that he advertises here. It was a Wednesday, 3 groups of 5-6 cars, it was a great time and I'll be heading out that way again with his Trackschool company - well worth it.
Gave it its Christmas clay bar and polish... and then 2 weeks later headed off to Wakefield. I had fun but didn't feel happy with her at all, I put the back end out once badly and went into the dirt and had some understeer issues outside the norm. I ended up letting off the throttle early and didn't throw it around as much as I did last time as I couldn't predict what it would do. I:20 was best. At the end of the day one of the other guys asked me how old the tyres were. Mental arithmetic later and I realised the backs were 8 years old and the fronts 6. Pulled them off and there were cracks through them. I'm not going to blame the tyres but I can't help but think that they contributed to the loss of the usual feel I have for the car. The fronts copped their usual track abuse and wore down past the tread markers by the end of the day at least. Time for a new set of 4 although RSRs are getting harder to find. I have a set of OEM 15s with tyres to put on so while the 16s are off the car I'll get them refurbished.
"younger" front tyres - backs were far worse with cracks but I'd never thought to track their age or check them.
Thought I'd service the Type R today and give the engine bay a clean only to notice that the battery tray had acid foamed on it. Unbolted the tray and hit it with a bicarb of soda mix. Time to sand back the rust and respray it. In the meantime I cleaned out the leaves and gunk that had built up under the tray over the years... kids' electric toothbrush did the job nicely... sand and paint tomorrow as I have to bolt it all back together to drive the car into the garage. Anyone got any phoenix yellow paint?
