Aesthetically - 'yes' - Type Rs look better with the rear wing on. If I was entering the car in a 'Show n Shine' I'd put it back on, but as a daily driver in peak hour city traffic - I'd prefer to leave it in the cupboard with the other ironing board. They are useless for producing downforce and actually just increase aerodynamic drag which slows you down and increases your fuel bills. It's one less thing to keep 'sooooo clean' as well.

Show n Shine should not be used on this forum. LOL.
If your worried about fuel bills you should have bought a GSi of the show room floor. At least you could have had it optioned to have no rear wing.

Thanks Ahmiie - I don't wash it all that often, but when I do - I try to do it properly.
Thanks Khanguskhan - you're right about personal preference - I prefer to be able to see traffic behind me when necessary. In peak hour traffic - it is necessary quite a bit. When I had the rear wing on the car - it was extremely difficult and I considered it to be a safety issue.
I never enter my car in 'Show n Shines'. That's the point!!!!! Therefore the rear wing will be staying in the cupboard.
When I bought the car - the Type R was rated quite highly in 'Bang for Bucks' in Motor Magazine. I did explore other alternatives at the time - namely the Nissan 200SX and the 'bug-eyed' Subaru WRX, but preferred the ITR because as a NA car - the insurance costs were significantly lower and the fuel economy was superior. The sound of the ITR was the real clincher however. When it hit the crossover point on my test drive - that howl and power right through to the 'redline' was difficult to forget. The 200SX - whilst being the smoothest on road and feeling the torquiest of the three - its engine was rough at the top end and it had a very small boot. The WRX just looked 'so wrong' after the previous model and it felt quite rough both on road and under acceleration. There were also some serious question-marks about the strength of its clutch - particularly from a standing start. The ITR made me work harder - but when I did - the result was very satisfying. The fact that this car was yet another car with a rear wing did not impress me at all.
A GSi is not a performance car and was targeted at a completely different segment of the marketplace. A Hyundai Excel was also another popular model in this segment. Ironically - it is probably buyers in this segment that are more heavily influenced by the addition of a rear wing - as 'show' tends to be more important to these buyers than 'go'.
Speaking of which - data would show a rear wing increases vertical load over the rear wheels, because that is what any object that creates drag behind the 'front' wheels will do. The windscreen therefore also creates significantly more vertical load on the rear wheels. The problem with increasing vertical load behind the 'rear' wheels is that it decreases vertical load in front of the 'front' wheels and vice versa. As the windscreen is between the front and rear wheels - it creates vertical load on both. This is much more useful. Honda probably felt it needed a large wing at the rear because it had designed the car to steer somewhat from the rear in order to minimise understeer at the front which FWD cars are slated for - particularly at racing speeds when coming off the power and cornering at the same time. Therefore - the rear wing would definitely be quite useful if you take your car to a racetrack and need to go around corners. It would however be better to remove the rear wing if you are drag racing to minimise the aerodynamic drag it creates. The car will accelerate faster and its terminal speed will be higher as it crosses the line. It could be the difference between winning and losing.
As I don't intend taking my car to the racetrack, nor driving at racing speeds on the road - my car will never need to have the rear wing put back on, unless I decide to put it back on for an hour, to take pictures of it, in order to stop people on here having a go because it looks more like a Monaro.

Thanks for the 'immaculate' tag MYDC5R. Digital photography tends to make it look spotless when in fact, it isn't quite that good I'd have to admit. It's done 119,703km and has had the timing belt changed. No mechanical issues to report when it goes in for its next scheduled service in a few weeks. Cheers!

I owned a GSi wingless and loved it. But I would never molest my type R like you have.

It's not your honest opinion that's the problem here Mr. Lepperfish - it's your attitude. If you 'don't give a shit' then do me a favour and get off of my thread. Thank-you!
By the way - I did not put the pictures up - that honour went to 'FlexR' who kindly found them for me elsewhere. Thank-you again!
This car is a 'genuine' Type R (wings clipped or not) and would never be mistaken for anything else by a true enthusiast of the model - even at a glance.
To be honest - I joined this forum to connect with other like-minded individuals who enjoy driving ITRs as much as I do (regardless of what they decide to 'do' or 'not do' to their cars) - but if it is commomplace for it to be used as a medium for 'bagging' other peoples' rides - I'll stick with itr-dc2.com instead.

I'd rather an honest
Opinion rather then a fake one.
If you joined this forum to connect with other like minded ITR and car enthusiasts then you have come to the right place.
Don't get me wrong, I love the DC2 shape wingless or not. I just think the Type R should have its wing in place.
I hope you stick around as everyone here really are genuine enthusiasts and we'd love to see/hear more about your experiences with the Type R.Last edited by DC2R; 18-08-11, 11:45 PM.
