Front Wheel Bearing... how can you tell? how much? and where?

    Hey guys,

I have searched and found articles which talk about wheel bearing, but I've got a question about it that I didn't find in the other threads...

An indication that the 'whirring' noise might be wheel bearing is fine... but how can you really tell that it is the wheel bearing without pulling off the wheel and taking it all apart? I'm pretty sure my brake pads are fine as every service I have, they check it at Hanny's and don't mention anything.

I went to get a pink slip done today and the guy told me after doing the brake test drive that my front driver's wheel bearing needs replacing... how did he know that? He did mention when he turns left, the car veers left a lot, and when I drive the car does veer left a bit, even after an alignment. Is this the indication that it is the wheel bearing?

So... question two... how much is it for a wheel bearing, where can I buy one, can I get any brand or should I get OEM, and who can do it? I usually get Hanny's to service my car...

You can get a Koyo bearing to suit from a bearing distributor for around $60 last time I checked... There is a cross reference Koyo catalogue available for download from their site I think.

Bearing noises are fairly unique, usually like a "wawawawa" sound that gets faster as the wheel speed increases, and sometimes particularly loud at a certain speed.

yep i do get that grinding/whirring noise that sometimes sounds like it goes "wawawa" in a grinding way sound... so i guess the guy was right saying it was the wheel bearing...

he said that it could actually fail a pink slip test... is this true?

if i don't pay attention to this wheel bearing, what is the worst that can happen to my car? what damage does it cause by not fixing/replacing it straight away?

Damage to Hub or stub axle. Depends on what bit of the bearing is failing. Your wheel won't come off, unless it cuts through the stub axle.

          Just fix it, ASAP.

My front left hand side wheel bearing has movement in it so i replaced it.

every thing els is spot on which is odd because there was a fair bit of movement in that bearing, but only that bearing ?? it never made any nosies

I though i should replace it because i do some high speed cornering with my DC2R

Did you find it a pain in the butt to get that half of the inner bearing race off the hub?

If there is play shaking the wheel left to right whilst in the air its a wheel bearing.

If there is play shaking the wheel top to bottom whilst in the air its the tie rod end.

It may be the other way around, I forget.

It's the other way around Danga, left to right is the same direction as the steering movement so that would indicate tie rod...

Do you need to press out the bearing or do they just slip on?
I know with toyotas you need a 1 ton press to press them in & out.
I've never had to do my honda yet

yes it was a big pain, I got around it by cutting 2 parallel slits in the race (not deep enough to hurt the hub) so my puller had something to grab on, then it came off no trouble at all just getting it moving at frist

also you do need a press to push the hub back in to the bearing. Lucky for me we have press at work so i just pressed it all out and pressed it back in again, it took 1/2 ton to push it back in.
