Selecting correct oil viscosity for the ambient temp is prolly better than idling away warming it up. The oil you choose can vary depending if you park inside/outside... summer/winter.

I think this article is bull*&^% when it comes to damage to the engine the Dr is not a mechanic maybe a tool but not a mechanic. Idleing and warming up are different, when you first start your cold car it is not at idle it is at a higher RPM to get the motor up to operating temp so you don't damage the engine. Idle is when the car is all warm and not doing anything which I agree is not good for car or enviroment especially if you are pissing in the street while your car is Idleing .Maybe Dr Tool should actualy talk to car manufactures and mechanics next time.

P.S usually wait till about 1500 rpm before driving then gentle acc till fully warmed up then

Well, you want to get the oil flowing through the engine good before putting it under load, otherwise you can ruin bearings. If the combustion chamber is too cold you can get uneven burning and hotspots as well, though that's not as much of an issue as oiling.

As far as getting warm, the engine will warm up faster being driven than just sitting there idling so in most cases letting it sit there and warm up for 4-5 minutes is a waste.

dont forget other non engine mechanical parts need warming up too - i idle for 10 seconds and light drive until radiator temp guage reaches normal position.

I always give my DC2R about 2 mins of ideling before driving off. I find the car runs much better when I do this. Always let the rpm drop down to about 1100-1200rpm as well.

however, he appears to be smarter than others...

by reading the article, it should be quite clear the Dr is quoting and paraphrasing other persons to support his comments regarding the practice of letting a car sit and idle to warm it up.

he is not referring to situations like idling the car at traffic lights once warm...

my supervisor (from UWA motorsport) and lecturer told me this ages ago, i tend to agree with the article. basically you need to heat up the engine as quick as possible to prevent condensation from building up in the pipes which will cause corrosion. hence just driving off is recommended rather than idling.
