    Civic Type R to return

As I posted here back in 2011, I was excited a Type R was coming back. It was then confirmed last year by Honda CEO Takanobu-san.

Now there's a new article saying it will be making at least 200kW. Turbo.

The coming of an all-new Honda Civic Type R was confirmed last year, but exactly what we can expect from the new hot-hatch remains a mystery.

For now, the carmker has revealed only that testing will begin on the famed Nurburgring later this year, promising that development "is going well".

Reports in recent months have suggested the new model will take on the increasingly hotter hot-hatch market with a powerful new turbocharged engine.

Yes, the Type R's quick-but-could-be-quicker days look to be behind it, with power figures well beyond 200kW expected to push the hatch to new performance heights.

Speaking with Britain's Auto Express last year, Honda R&D engineer Yasuhisa Arai reportedly confirmed a 2.0 litre turobcharged engine for the new model, producing nearly 225kW.

With those sorts of figures, the Civic Type R will move into the top tier of the hot hatch market, rivalling the Megane RS, the Focus ST and a host of others.

"We have an idea of the products our rivals are developing and regardless of what anyone else produces, our car will be the fastest front-wheel-drive model around the Nurburgring when it goes on sale,” Arai said, echoing recent comments from Honda boss Takanobu Ito.

"We will do whatever we need to in order to make that happen."

This week, Honda UK boss Dave Hodgetts is understood to have confirmed with the same paper that the new model will produce "at least" 198kW (265bhp), but 225kW remains the target.

It has also been reported that the new CTR will get all-wheel-steering for increased speed in corners, along with a mechanical limited-slip differential.

The new Civic Type R is expected to hit showrooms sometime in 2015.

All wheel steering. Thats a really crap idea. hence why all the GTR drives disable it! Other then that i should start saving. Not to buy one. But to do a engine/tranny conversion. LOL

Can't wait to see the real deal specs on the next type r
but can only see Honda staying true to its history of delivering us overpriced and underspecced cars, and then wondering why they dont sell?

Forced induction is no surprise after the fn2 engine will no longer meet euro emissions. Power needs to be 200 + if thay want it to be the fastest around nurburgring. Sounds like the right formula to me. Honda may be getting reved up again, talk of f1 again, Nsx's return and a project such as this?

The question is if honda Australia see it viable to sell here?

It's not exactly the new Civic Type R's engine but it shows potential.

Enthusiasts have been calling for turbocharged Hondas for over a decade and finally the Japanese automaker has decided to listen. But there is a catch.

Officially revealed at the Paris Motor Show today, the company’s new HR-412E powerplant is a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder motor that also features direct injection. It’s not a production engine, however, and is instead designed specifically for the new Civic World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) race car.

It is, however, a strong indication of the direction Honda intends to take with the upcoming Civic Type R, which only this week Honda CEO Takanobu Ito confirmed will go into production specifically for the European market (another catch).

In a release Honda says the future Civic Type R will make use of the “technologies developed through Honda’s participation in the World Touring Car Championships (WTCC).” Reading between the lines, it’s very likely that means a turbocharged direct-injection powerplant.

In addition, Honda says the new Type R will, “aim to set new standards in performance and handling,” with a goal of being the fastest front-drive car on the Nurburgring.

In summary, a turbocharged Honda engine might make it into the new Civic Type R, which isn’t planned for the US (though there’s still the possibility), and Honda’s enthusiast fan base will have to be patient too, with the car not expected until 2015.
