    The Lunchbox

    Howdy Club ITR forum, my name is Will and I have owned a Honda Civic ED hatch for nearly 4 years now, originally bought it with the plan to start attending track days, which has happened with the car coming a long way from it's original stock form. I've had an up to date build thread for the car over on Honda-Tech, however seeing as many use this forum still I thought I'd make the change so I could engage in local talk with members who can relate to tracks here in Australia. I'll simply copy and paste the thread to here and date each post so it doesn't look like I built the car in 1 day lol, here's a link to the original thread on Honda-Tech anyways.

    Anyways.. I bought her October 13th 2014 on a Monday night from Gosford, the following morning 9am I had my HSC English exam however I didn't care. I had been searching for months for a clean hatch in white and I found this.

    So the first week I had her I bought a whole black/grey interior set due to there being a ugly blue one in there and I just couldn't stand it lol... Managed to fit it all into the lunchbox including dash, plz guys its a ute!



    I also did a custom muffler delete because back in the days I loved making noise with a loud exhaust, still do but starting to prefer induction>exhaust!

      Next up was some suspension mods, and you cannot go wrong with coilovers! Picked up some second hand GAB SS Coilover's along with front and rear Skunk2 Camber arms, and also a red center garnish for the rear as the ADM came out with black ones instead.



      My rep j's spoiler arrived and I bought a set of Work Equip 01's painted red, as I feel these suited the car with that oldschool look of the wheels aswell. I still had to lower it more as this was way too high for me. Specs for the works are 15x7.5 +32(front) +29(rear).





      A couple of weeks after I had installed the camber arms and coilovers, I went through a massive pot hole and managed to snap the top mounting bracket stud of one of the front camber arms, was suprised because its skunk2 and they are a good brand, so i thought. So I did my research and found out the actual mounting brackets of the skunk2 camber arms are really weak and you can bend it with ease if you use your hands. So as suggested on the forum, I swapped the OEM mounting bracket in and havn't had any trouble since (Y)

        JDM FRONT WOOOO!

        Got my JDM front from a mate and took it straight to my painter, he cleaned it all up with a fresh coat of OEM white to match, and I chucked it all on that night from 8pm-2am it took me. I also had all my side trims and rear bar trim painted white to match the EF9 all white colour scheme but didn't get the door trims on for another few weeks later. Here are some photos of my car the next day at the JDMYard Honda Show-off 2014:

          For attaching the new spoiler I just covered the top of the stock spoiler on sikaflex and then held it down overnight with some weight, hasn't moved since! (Spoiler still attached 4 years later [2018])




          SO next in the build came a bride low max, 3 piece brace kit from the states and a lower tie bar. I just used EK side mounts on the stock rails to fit the bride fixed back, its so comfy and hugs you like crazy! The 3 piece brace kit was fornt and rear struts and c pillar, but cannot fit the front strut brace due to my carby lines being in the way, as its suited for the EFI D15 in the states..

            The whole point of this build is for me to take it to the track as well. I came across a event here called Nugget Nationals, its a 1.5L max car comp where they do x amount of rounds at different tracks, dynos and motorkana's. Luckily the lunchbox fits the requirements and I was able to enter. So it was now time to prep the car. I did a coolant flush, used Nulon coolant. For the oil I used Penrite 10w40 Racing. I also did the DA9 front brake setup swap 262mm, I also got the rears but needed to replace the bushings on the trailing arms. The DA9 BMC + BB was installed as well. Hard lines were slightly bent to fit them into prop valve.




            The track day was a 6hr drive down in VIC from Sydney, so my ED buddy came along as well. We loaded the cars up of spares and tools and fluids and we set off Friday lunchtime. The track day was the following Saturday and boy it was a lot of fun! Learnt so much and met some cool people, I ran my mates wheels with some Achielle ATR Sports just to get my through this track day, they were alright but everyone else were running grippy hankook's. I finished 5th last which I was happy with as it was my first track day, much more room for improvements. It was then time to get new bushings all round and some proper tyres, but the main thing was more seat time for experience. But at the end of the day, Nugget Nationals is to have fun with other Nuggets, its an even environment for all the cars, and I'll defs be returning! Heres the write up:

            Just want to say a big thanks to my bud Al Vincent who came down, went through a few hickups but he was there to assist and sit on the side whilst i had fun out on the track, next time you'll get your car out on the track

              Hey all wassup, time to continue on with the updating, been a bit busy lately with work so here we go:

              Probably 1 or 2 months after my track day, unfortunately i was coming home late at night, it had been raining and going through a round about, lost control and aqua planed into the curb, bending a few suspension components and destroying my rim.. So me and 2 of my other ED/EF owner mates all needed parts, so chipped in to buy a $300 ED/EF hatch with no rego for parts, and took all what we needed. Swapped in the straight suspension components (LCA, caster rod, front radiator support thingo) and I also got my rim repaired




              Heres a photo to show the bent vs straight castor rod, try figure which is which hahaha




              Took about a 2-3 weeks to fix everything, around my studies and what not and running to many problems. But I went on a tunnel/hwy run with some other hondas and are some pics from it, happy i got the car all fixed and back in action!

                So since I last posted, a few things have gone wrong. After I had her running again, I noticed I could smell a lot of petrol fumes one morning, but thought its just cause its carby. Drove to the shops and back and I was down nearly half a tank from full. Under the bonnet revealed the problem, the fuel pressure regulator was leaking, pretty much a constant drip coming out of it, with petrol running down the intake side of the motor, very dangerous from the heat of the motor.. So I went to the wreckers and found one, simply cut it off of that one as the OEM red rubber fuel lines wouldn't come off, also popped to the local auto parts store for some fuel lines. Got back, cut the lines to the same length and then chucked it all onto the new fuel pressure regulator and on she went, FIXED!!



                Then the following night I had been having a little bit of fun with my mates on the road, once I got home the lunchbox was idling really rough, bogging like crazy. 2 of my spark plugs were sat in oil, with the result being the tube seals were old, probably never replaced from factory, and were crisp hard. After 5 days of attempting to source the gasket kit, finally got it and put it on, along with 4 new spark plugs as these ones looked pretty wrecked too, she's now running a lot smoother with her new bits in. She does also need a service done on the asap, but awaiting more money lol



                Then to top off all of this, I started leaking petrol again, this time onto the exhaust side of the motor which made me very concerned, the result this time, the mechanical fuel pump was bust. On the picture provided I've drawn arrows to where it was leaking from, its like the metal was pressed together and has parted, and it was spewing out petrol. Same as before, went back to the same wreckers and took the fuel pump from there and whipped her on.



                Now with all of the 3 piece's replaced, she has been running fine, enjoying driving her around, now just awaiting to get the money together for a bushing kit, muchly needed!

                  UPDATE TIME WOO!

                  Still a bit behind updating but im getting there because its now party time with new parts coming in! we decided to fix up my axle back exhaust with a nice 2" stainless steel muffler delete. heres some pictures from doing it!
                  Also bought a DC2R OEM short shifter and installed. Had to grind the base down from 40mm to 30mm which is the same as the ED shifter

                    Anyways a bit has actually happened, new seats, rear disc swap, bushings and soon to have track tyres, especially with my next (2nd) track day coming up in under 2 weeks!! So I'll give you a quick run down with whats happened with pics

                    So I managed to pick up some Sparco Ultra fixed back bucket seats for pretty cheap, fitted them up but I didn't like the feel of them, because I'm a skinny person it hurt my back, had a weird lumbar. So I sold these for a lot more than I paid. Kinda didn't want to sell due to these being slightly rare/discontinued, but I needed to, heres how they looked fitted:


                    Next I used the money I got from selling them that night to go straight to someone else's and pic up some shmick red Recaro SR3 from the Integra DC2R. They were kinda dirty but thats fine by me, mint conditon on the bucket and sooooo comfy!



                    Few weeks later my bushing kit had all arrived, finally! Its been hell since March with destroyed bushings all round, squeaking like hell, car swaying along the highway at 80km + ... That also meant I could finally install my Intega DA9 rear disc conversion because the RTA bushing was here. So I dismantled my car and dropped all the parts off to my mechanic whom pressed the bushings in, and then picked them up 2 days later and installed the rest. The rear conversion wasn't that hard at all, the whole thing about dropping the fuel tank for hand brake line isn't true, I didn't touch the tank one bit.

                    I didn't really take any photos of the new bushings in, was too excited to install them all, but I ran into a problem trying to hook the new handbrake cables up to the pivot point inside. The right was too short and was hard to reach, so I left the handbrake unbolted under the car and managed to fit it, but then just cable tied the line so it wouldn't move around:



                    With this all done I could then finally get a wheel alignment for track, 0 toe all round, -2.5 camber front -1.5 camber rear:


                    Track day in under 2 weeks, I need some gauges so I know how my oil temp + pressure and water temp is going whilst I hunting down the best time I can achieve! Bought some Defi gauges, have not yet fully wired them up, only so they power and turn on. Sandwhich plate arrived today as well. Once in I'll try and get a video for you all of the start up sequence, they are pretty cool! Keen to have them working. EDIT: Best bit is, these are actually 'fakes' however 3yrs later still running fine and still exact same as values on the Hondata

                      Still need to get a pic of the gauges on which I'll insert here later, but here's how the sand which plate looked with the sensors wired up to it (ensured I used enough telfon tape on the thread so it wouldn't leak, should problem check now see if it has leaked since I installed):

                      Also finally got around to getting some tyres on my track wheels! Went for Nitto NT830's as they are a new introduced tyre from Nitto, my supplier said they are very grippy and should go well on the Lunchbox (after my first track day in this pic, cannot find the old photo and now I'm fixing everything since Photobucket went ass up). For the rims I picked up some cheap Honda Fat 5's and painted them white!

                        Few days after I got my tyres, I had my first trackday at Wakefield Park Raceway. It was a very fun day, had been looking forward to this day for a long time. Drove down with my two mates (Evo 8MR & Corolla AE102). The car handled so well with the full hardrace bsuhing kit installed and the Nitto's too. My PB for the day was a 1.23.00, think I started at a 1.26.00 but as always, each time you learn more about the track and that PB gets lower and lower.

                        Hoping to go back soon to try defeat that time, I know I can, so time will show!!

                          So I finally got around to taking some pictures of my Defi gauge setup for oil temp + pressure and water temp!


                          Also today my Ultra Racing Front and Rear Strut braces turned up, the rear is a lot thicker than expected. Keen to see how they feel now in the car! For the rear I did need to cut out some tabs in the plastic to actually fit the bar, took 2 mintues with a angle grinder, only tool I had to use lol..




                          Also went to the drags the other day to see how slow I could go! Best was a 17.2, meh can't expect anything much, its a dual carby motor thats 25 years old lol.. will post up some footage soon!

                            Hey guys its been a while since my last update, the lunchbox has been going well! New year means its time for a new heart transplant! Yep you heard me! Going for the ITR motor (B18C7), been piecing together my EFI convertion parts, so far I have:
                            -CRX EFI tank (one I got is rusted so I need to source another )
                            -loom
                            -Integra DA9 rear T bracket
                            -Walbro 255 pump
                            -Innovative B series mounts 60A (wanted 70A but these came up cheap and near brand new)
                            -Innovative cable to hydro actuator (anyone used these before?)
