Plus using a filter might just save your hard earned dosh, just in case this happens...

The most expensive is not always the best, but the best is always expensive.

GoldCoastDC5R do you mean the Nikon AF ED 70-300mm f/4-5.6 D lens? if so, I too have that lens and I absolutely HATE it... I am now tossing up whether I buy the Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D ED or the new superdooper AFS VR 70-300mm f/2.8G IF-ED which about twice the price
go the AFS VR 70-300mm f/2.8G IF-ED since you are a full-time photographer.

            sorry typo... 70-200mm f/2.8

TeMp... the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 holds its 2.8 speed throughout the zoom range and the 17-70mm will range between 2.8 to 4.5 through the zoom.

Im guessing this flucation of 2.8 - 4.5 is not desirable?

it means that you will more or less have to double your shutter speed at the long end of the zoom when the aperture is wide open to let in the same amount of light in compared to the f2.8 at the wide end of the zoom. also, f4.5 doesnt give you decent bokeh/background blur
