    Nikon Lens

I am about to buy a 2nd hand D70 body and thus will required to get a lense. I am more or less a beginner so is there any reccomendation for what lens I should start with? Any web pages that can give me comparsions and reviews?

Looking for more of a flexible lense (if there is such a thing) to begin with.

Just wondering what do you mean of "flexable" ?

I am using Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 SP (A09) for normal usage, best bang of buck i think. You'll find alot of comparasions and review on this lens if search around google

a lot of people start out with this lens. for the money i think i can safely say that it cant be beat (unless you want a different range)

of course it depends on your style of shooting, and the subjects that you shoot

you can also check out www.fredmiranda.com/reviews for mixed user reviews on a lot of different lenses

you can get it for < $600 new. i just sold mine to Fueltank for $400 with a 67mm Hoya Pro1 UV filter. he got a bargain!

they usually go for around $400-500 on the 2nd hand market i think depending on the condition..

the sigma 24-70 is another good one if you're on a budget, with that extra 4mm at the wide end which can be very useful. but it is BIG and quite HEAVY. it costs around about the same as the tamron.

Why Nikon? Don't tell me its still the shutter timer issue...

If you stick with a Canon, you can always borrow Alistair/my lenses if we're not using them :P

If you're after a flexible lens, I'd still consider the kit 18-70mm lens. It should be wide enough for most applications and long enough to still have some fun

                    lol

I got the Sigma 24-70mm, its quite a good lens, I picked it up 2nd hand cheap for about $350 or so and its been a workhorse.

yeah its big and bulky, due to the 24mm range it ends up being 82mm, which is nice and expensive when it comes to buying filters, my UV filter alone was over $100 for it.

thats no excuse to have a HUUUUGE front element. my 12-24mm only has a 77mm filter thread (so do all of my other lenses now so i can swich filters)

What filters do you guys use because i have noticed that hoya make quite a few different ones, is there that much difference between them besides price?

Eg, Circular Polariser and Super Pro 1 Circular Polariser???

On the topic of Lenses I mostly use the Nikon 18-70mm lense and find it very good, i also have a Nikon ED 70-300mm 1.5-5.6D which is an ok lense but sometimes struggles a bit when focusing on fasat moving objects or on subjects which are very close, I guess tho for $400 brand new its not to bad.

I will probly upgrade my zoom lense in the near future, what would you guys recommend??

The higher end filters (HMC, S-HMC) have multicoated glass that allows better light transmission, and the multicoating also helps prevent flare, ghosting and CA.

With the cheaper single coated hoya filters (green labelling), i've found that they soften the image a fair bit, and create excessive amounts of CA.

yep agreed with Thanh... about the filters... not about mine being big and soft lol

GoldCoastDC5R do you mean the Nikon AF ED 70-300mm f/4-5.6 D lens? if so, I too have that lens and I absolutely HATE it... I am now tossing up whether I buy the Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D ED or the new superdooper AFS VR 70-300mm f/2.8G IF-ED which about twice the price
