mm the reason i like networks drives is because gigabit lan is actually faster than what a hardrive can read.. at any one given point. (not including Raid, raptor HD,SCSI HD)
what u need prettymuch is a very large Case with a somewhat decent computer in it (doesnt neet Video card sound card just motherboard a bit of ram, onboard Videocard is enough) and a somewhat ok CPU.)
I emphasize u need a GOOD PSU because thats whats giving power to all the Hardrives.. ohh and typically you want a motherboard that houses maybee 6 - 8 sata slots..
once you get OS installed you prettymuch set up like any other computer share all the drives you want to share.. and turn on remote desktop so you can access the computer via your other computer if needed
once you boot it up make sure your router assigns a static IP to that computer (thats just for ease) ie 192.168.0.8
then on your main computer you can start mapping networkdrives. its pretty easy you prettymuch . right mouse click on My computer . mapnetwork drives. then a menu thing pops up..
select a drive letter and find the location of the Hardrive (network neightborhood, workgroup or MSHOME, then the hardrive and click next or ok.)
done.. i think thats all if it =P im not infront of my computer and cant test it on work computer because they are disabled..Memorable quotes

my definition of decent is kinda upmarket..
give us a price range =-P.. the computer im using as my server now is actually fairly expensive.. around the 2k region.. well prolly about 1.5k now..
chespest way.. goto msy or CPL if you got those in sydney not sure..
get an already built computer they cost what 300 bucks you only need case only no monitor.. and add as many hardrives as you can fit in there =P..
just make sure its got gigabit lan.Memorable quotes

the netgear HD last time i check is only 100Megabits..lan
not quite fast enough.. it will max out easily..
gigabit will give you more bandwith to play with.
and those netgear network hardrives are expensive i think..Memorable quotes

i was initially thinking about the netgear network harddrive storage device... as it can be hooked up to the router directly and house 2 hdds...
