scorpion tech here in melb is selling that dlink thing for $299

you can get dual 500 gig WD sata2 16 meg from MSY for less than 200 each at the moment...

i think thats one of the cheapest alternatives. There are many other NAS devices that cost a hell of a lot more, and do not come with HDDs also. This is probably an entry level thing, so would only be good for light applications.

how about getting a used PC off a forum like overclockers, and build a file server from that. it would have minimum cpu and ram requirements and may be more cost effective and versatile.

Thats actually a good idea..

because im sure people want to get rid of their older computer and in terms of just file sharring you dont need a fast processor and or sound or graphics.. you just really need sata slots. and a big ass case =P..

also another issue is that i dont have space for another massive case.. so i guess im better off with the dlink storage device

Who said you needed space just one power points anywhere in the house and a cat5e or cat 6 cable to reach your gigabit switch hehe =P.. or shove it in a cupboard =P..

dont have the luxury of chucking a huge case anywhere in the house... its either in my room or no where (parents will kill me if i place it anywhere else)

i think i can shove 3 computers on my table before it gets to hard to work on =P.. not including monitors though

Just though i would post up a comparison of Computer Cases.,.

That large thing on the Floor is a Cooler master Stacker.. it has like something insane of like 12 drive bays.. but thats fine.. because your motherboard most likely max out at 8 sata slots (not including eSATA)

And ont he table is the new Shuttle =P

the Cooler master Weights and INSALE 35 Kg (weighted on my Home Scale prolly not accurate i didnt believe it at first.. till you pick it up) Thx Mugsee for moving it for me hahahah!!!! hows your back?
