use WPA/WPA2 with a long fucking key. my key is my mobile number 5 times over so i can remember it. WEP is too easy to break... can be done in less than 10 minutes with brute force.

if u wanna take it that step further, use mac address filtering as well and add the mac address of your laptop. to get the mac address, run the command prompt on your laptop and type ipconfig /all and look for the physical address in the form xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx. you might also have to add the mac addresses of any wired computers as well if it's not just wireless mac address filtering. make sure that you also change the router password and do not leave it as default.

Give Microsoft a call. They will give you a new key, just say your motherboard blew up and needed replacing.

if you've enabled mac address filtering, then it wont connect. you will need to get the mac's MAC address and enter that into your mac address filtering page on the router too.

click the apple icon at the top left > About This Mac > More Info... > Network

the MAC address is at the bottom under Ethernet: MAC Address:...

Mac Filter Addressing was not enabled to begin with.

Well my laptop is not unable to connect to the wireless router, which is a good thing now that I know other computers are less likely to leech off my internet.
It's asking for a password, but showing errors.

Now need to get my laptop to connect.
I'm trying to stick to simply using WEP first, just to see how things go.

Say if I was to use this page setup (WEP)


Now I've chosen 128bit WEP mode, HEX key entry method.

I'm assuming the Key 1-4 are the passwords?
If not, which is?

no, its just Key 1 indicated by Default Key ID so just 0101010101

did you do it manually or let the laptop set it up automatically?

try Apple icon > System Preferences... > Network

delete the old connection to your router, then add it manually by pressing the [+] button, then enter your SSID, WEP and key.

have you restarted the router after changing all of the settings? if not, save settings and restart it.
