    Whats your Oil Temp at track conditions?

    After talking to BYP, Yonas, and Maracer. I curious to see what people's oil temp are reading after a few hard sessions on their local track. Please do also vote in the poll provided so some easy2read %'s can be calculated.

    Please only vote if you actually know what temp it averages at. And please follow this template below;

      Track Day ^^ Recent.

      ^^ Didn't wanna go above 130, so i finished the hot lap i was doing then came down for a cool down lap..

              The track cars I build, we aim for 80-85deg C.
              So I can't vote as there's no tab for this range.

              Engines: B18C, K20A, K2150, K24 etc
              Odometer : various
              Oil viscosity: 15w50 motul 300v
              Aftermarket tad: yes
              Oil cooler: yes (36 row +)
              Oil thermostat: yes
              Oil temp average: 80-85deg C

              Supersprints, track days, IPRA, Sports & Sedans etc

                  Adrian, that is quite low compared to the poll on this thread. How did you build an engine to achieve that low temp on track conditions, also on the topic of this, could you shed some light on what you think is too high/low for optimum oil temp?

                      Nothing ground breaking, just sound thermal management & a bit of maths.
                      Basics are from your engine output, you can then size the coolers,
                      Say 300hp engine which produces 12,720 Btu/min
                      So to keep the engine from overheating at full noise you need a cooling system capable of losing 763,200 Btu/hr
                      So go an extra 5% just to be safe... & the target is 801,360 Btu/hr
                      So if the car is a DC5R for example, the std engine output is 154kw,
                      Let's call it 210hp at the fly.
                      So the std cooling system can lose 8,904 Btu/min
                      Now we all know they don't overheat or blow up with small power gains so I'll give it an extar 5% margin & call it 9,349 Btu/min
                      So to keep the new engine cool, we toss is say a Koyo rad gaining a 25% improvement in cooling ability over stock,
                      So 701,190 Btu/hr but you're still short of the target.
                      Add an Earls oil cooler.
                      Extra wide 34 row, gives you an extra 99,960 Btu/hr
                      Now we're at 801,150 btu/hr cooling capacity. (Pretty much on the money)
                      So now the thermostat will be able to regulate/control the temp without fear of thermal runaway.
                      Now to work it out exactly, you need to know how much fuel you burn so you can calculate your thermal efficiency but you can look that up.

                      Usual parts are
                      Low temp thermostat
                      dimple core radiator (helps recover coolant speed with larger rad core)
                      Water oil heat exchange (factory will do)
                      Oil cooler thermostat (Stop it getting too cold)
                      Large Earls temp-a-cure oil cooler (-10 AN fittings/hoses)

                      Re optimum temps, IMO
                      I prefer 175~185deg F or 80~85deg C average.
                      Engine life is longer, oil pressure is better, oil doesn't break down.
                      Good head start on catching thermal runaways or increased peak temps when vehicle encounters traffic reducing cooling efficiency,
                      so less chance of overheat & therebye head gasket issues etc
                      Down side is slightly less output, slightly higher fuel consumption, oil needs to be fuel dilution resistant
                      Hense the use of the 300V

                      That said, the std car runs at 204~206deg F or 96~97deg C
                      No issue here as long as it doesn't get away from you on the track.
                      Do your homework thermal management wise & the same methods will work at a higher temp.
                      The thermostat regulates the operating temp.
                      So bigger rad & oil cooler with std thermostat.

                        Why would turning the heater or air con on help lower engine heat???? Also turning on aircon losses power??

                            Arr ok.. does it matter what speed you put the fan on?? or is lowest speed fan level and full heat good???? And what about the air con?? I thought it had to do with the fans run with the air con on.. but while driving cant see the fans making a difference..

                              Thanks for that Adrian, looks like I gotta sit down and do alot of calculations when sorting out the cooling mods later this year before going through catalogues
