No one has mentioned Platinum here. Just wondering what is the difference between the Platinum and Iridium plugs? I have been told that because Platinum is a more scare metal than Iridium, more plugs are being made out of Iridium - apart from that they are the same thing. Is this true?

people say all sorts of things don't they!

ask that person who told you that what they think about the new Yttrium tipped plugs?

No, I asked on here, because I thought you guys would know. I'm not going to go back to a shop and ask that, because I doubt their knowledge.

well, for starters, the person you spoke to has not studied his/her precious metals to a great degree, as Iridium is about 10 times less abundant than Platinum...

Alright, well thanks... now what's the differences, pros and cons, between Platinum and Iridium in the use of Spark Plugs?

iridium is the most corrosion resistant metal known.. so i think its probably better than platinum.

longer lasting.. but i dont know which is a better conductor etc etc..

what do they use in our DC2R plugs? platinum or iridium? i cant remember which...

maybe when they say platinum or iridium they talk about the same thing.. some alloy involving both...

LOL I wouldn't call the salesperson at autoone my "friend". So no difference at all?

Honda said that stock OEM plugs are Platinum. Once again not sure.

Some plugs uses both metals - the OEM plugs IFR7G-11KS for the K20A2 came with platinum tipped ground electrodes and iridium tipped center electrodes

Quoting from NGK website on benefits of iridium:

"Iridium is a precious metal that is 6 times harder and 8 times stronger than platinum, it has a 1,200(=F) higher melting point than platinum and conducts electricity better. This makes it possible to create the finest wire center electrode ever. Prior till now, platinum had been favored for long life or performance spark plugs due to its high melting point, also the technology did not exist to machine and bond iridium on a spark plug electrode(at least in a cost effective manner). Iridium industrial spark plugs have been around for years, but still sells for over a hundred dollars per plug. Just now is the technology available to effectively use iridium in a spark plug for automotive applications. The strength, hardness and high melting point of iridium allows NGK to manufacture their iridium ultra-fine wire center electrode to 0.7mm. One of the finest firing points in the industry! (Thus far there has been no problems reported regarding use of iridium plugs with nitrous oxide.)"

I was told that the k20a2 used Denso iridium plugs as oem... cant remember who by though

(just so you know, platinum and iridium are "elements".

alloy has nothing to do with them...)
