One of the larger manufacturers of final drives for the 6 speed gearbox sitting behind K series engines is JAS Motorsport in Italy (www.jasmotorsport.com) previous mentioned in this thread.
The new Civic Type R uses a 5.06:1 ratio final drive. There is two parts required to charge the ratio, firstly the ring gear (41233-RPN-000) and a matching countershaft (23221-RPN-000). The price from Japan is $499 including GST for the two parts.
Spoon Sports also sell the same kit. Probably made in the same factory as the genuine Honda parts (and ATS kit).
Just to clarify how gear ratios (including final ratio) are defined, a lower ratio is indicated by a higher number. For example, 5:06:1 is regarded as a lower ratio than 4.764:1. JAS make a hugh range of very low final drive ratios even as low as 6+:1. JAS final drive kits are very expensive though.
Just when you come to fit a different final drive ratio, normally it is suggested that new bolts are used to fit the ring gear to the differential unit. There are 10 bolts at about $2 each. Further, when fitting the new counter shaft, the end-float (the sideways movement in the shaft) must be measured and mostlikely a different size shim washer is required (about $7). Time wise, it takes much longer to remove and replace the gearbox in the car than pulling it apart, replacing the ratio and reassembling.
Finally, if you want a lower ratio for more sporty performance around the streets and on the track, but would still like the engine reving moderately in 6th gear, fit a higher ratio 6th gear. You can make the car rev less in top gear even with the lower final ratio than standard. About $200 including GST for a higher ratio 6th gear set.Last edited by Evatec; 04-08-07, 11:09 PM.

Evatech: thats a very interesting suggestion to change to a higher ratio 6th gear in order to preserve fuel econ. Who would sell higher ratio 6th gears for our GB?
Secondly, from what Im told changing a FD is more labour intensive/complex then just changing the clutch/fw, as in you would need to open the GB more to change it?

TeMp, yeap it is certainly more labour intensive and complex compared to changing the clutch and/or flywheel. Generally it is best to replace the clutch and flywheel, and also upgrade the LSD while changing your final drive assuming the other components are all still stock.
It is a very expensive mod but as all gearbox mods/rebuilds go I think it is best to do it all at once and save yourself some time and money in the future. Also if I might add, i'd much rather upgrade the clutch, flywheel, LSD and FD than the usual top of the line intake, headers, exhaust mods budget permitting ofcourse!
