this effect of having to stand close usually relates to the amount of electromagnetic interference in the environment.

when i used to live at artarmon (site of ABC TV transmitter), i had to hold the beeper close to the car chassis soemtimes to get it to work, but elsewhere it worked from many tens of meters away...

i highly doubt it is an actual "feature" of an alarm system, i will only be convinced otherwise if i see it written down in a brochure...

I agree!! I had troubles arming/disarming in Chatswood but other than that it was fine...and I remember that Ed has problems too!!!

and IMHO, I reckon it doesn't matter what alarm system you have as they're all pretty similar but it all comes down to the installer and how they install the alarm.

My skyline had a brant and each time I was in chatswood I could arm but not disarm so after that I just locked the doors and never armed it when in chatswood.

          haha
I haven't had any problems with my alarm in chatswood

A stealth install is an install done which basically is not visible.

Most installs are easily found by.
          1. looking under the dash and finding the brain which sits visible.
          2. following the led or sensor wires back to the alarm brain.
          3. looking for messy wiring under the dash that doesn't look stock.
          4. looking for a wad of black cabling (which is how Aus standards makes them)

You may ask what difference it makes, well all they have to do is find the wiring which will lead them to the brain. when they find the brain they can bypass it.

If you can't get access to the brain ur less likely to be able to have ur car stolen.

          btw theft prevntion methods.
          1. Visible LED
          2. Sticker on windows
          3. Club lock
          4. Tie recaro's to steering wheel with bike chain/lock
          5. etc etc

Does anyone use the DEI Alarms including the Viper 500 range? Any experiences?

DEI alarms are good, some of the best in the industry, but most of them are not aussie standards and are not good for insurance.

They only provide one point of immobilisation btw.

But most honda's come with an immobiliser anyway right? Being that the chip inside the key provides another added point of immoblisation?

A solution to the brain being under the dash and thiefs follow a trail of wires from the LED, put a screamer under the dash. How long can you possibly stand 68db or so of high pitched screaching?!

Well I have a Viper alarm and have never had a problem with it!

Personally you should not be getting quotes to get an alarm. You should be quizzing installers to see how they will install the alarm.

If the alarm brain isnt hidden the alarm can be overridden.

If your really serious and your in Sydney I can do a stealth alarm install for you, but only on DC2's, or I can walk you through doing it yourself.

There is no point in getting an alarm that is tossed under the dash, if you can find the brain by popping ur head under the dash. A thief can take ur car in under 2 mins.

If your in brisbane go to audioexpress to get it done. He is the only guy i know in Aus who does stealth installs.

                        btw. Your alarm should have
                        1. Glass break sensor
                        2. Tilt sensor

The other sensors are garbage so dont bother with them.

Do not get brant, go to a subaru forum and see how 95% of owners have problems with them. Mongoose or Rhino the rest are shit
I can't stress how important it is to have a stealth install done. If you spend 500bucks and the alarm can be found then you have wasted your money.

I wasted $550 on a shit install performed by a shop in liverpool, alarm was simply tossed under the dash. Would never reccomend that place.

What's one way to quiz installers?

"Where abouts do you guys install the alarm brain?"

I want to quiz them and ask, but dont want to mention the word stealth which will obviously give them a clue that's what I'm after and they'll just say Yes to everything.

last time i checked a good screamer was 110DB.

The oem honda immobilizer doesn't work. If it did then why would so many DC2R's get stolen in the states. They can easily be bypassed.

And im sure any thief can get past it.
