Ok I'll check that asap when I get home, I don't think there is any though mainly because I washed my car 2 days ago so I don't think I'll be able to find out, however when I washed the only areas with heavy dirty or black stains were under sideskirts no where else was dirty cleaned under bumper above exhaust too, wiped it down with a chamois that wasn't stained either. (My car's yellow)
And I've had my front watch my car from behind while I rev all the way to the limit and my car isn't running rich at all no smoke what so ever, we did this less than a week ago.

So is there anything else I can look for?

What I was thinking is that, it's a 40 minute drive to the Melb meet on sunday, if by the time I get there my temp looks stupid I'll just get the new thermostat in. Will be doing the fan test today my car should be dead cold by the time I get to it.

Thanks heaps for the help guys, much appreciated.

no, it is warming up, so will 'warm up' for a bit of time, then gradually reduce until it gets into 'closed loop' operation mode...

but richer during warm-up improves idle quality and prevents hesitation... as the engine gradually gets to operating temperature, the ECU incrementally leans out the fuel mixture to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

so a low temp fan switch would also contribute to this problem in a small way ?
not in a big way, or maybe at all...

fan switch it only turns the fans on, but the thermostat will determine the engine temp - fans are just needed on cars because cars usually stop moving, at lights etc...

what khanguskhan experiences when he puts the demist heater on is the engine coolant going through the radiator (heat exchanger) inside the car's dash - this should not affect coolant temp if the thermostat is working fine or it is cold (like below 5 degrees)

nah - sounds like it is not too bad at all... is the muffler tip sooty black?

and a run to 8000rpm wont make the soot we are talking about as the car would have been running in 'open loop' and largely ignoring the coolant temperature...

Oh ok, when I washed it the outside external the tip was all shiny and new looking, that's before even washing it it was already shiny and clean. the inside has soot though but I'm guessing that's normal? but yes the bumper's clean I know that much.

then sounds like you are being overly sensitive to watching your temp needle...

but check with your mechanic how much it will cost for a new one anyway? it is a cheap part and can be replaced in minutes...

Hey guys, just a small update,
I will definitely get my thermostat replaced next service, and tinker when I go home to my car there actually is a little bit of soot under the bumper, but that's less important now as the car was pre warmed up, dropped off at my sis's place for 30 minutes got back in needle went up sped up and then the needle went DOWNNNNN, at 70-100 km/h fair bit of revving but it pretty much stayed down on the rest of the trip home which was about 10-15 minutes driving. So I don't think I'm just thinking things anymore.

So definitely getting it replaced, and the light in my glovebox just went out sigh. Will probably have a look at it when I have some spare time otherwise I'll get some hands on assistance at the meet.

                    Cheers guys

Don't wait 2000km to your next service. Change the thermostat ASAP.

I can do a service early? If so I'll arrange to book it in, what happens when it does reach 125000 then? Sorry, but yes I am actually this crap with cars.

LOL you can service when ever you want to. Just make a time to get your thermostat done and be done with it.

                                yep - certainly thermostat.

and just liek DC2R said - the 'servicing schedule' is only a guide... it is based on time & distance and is different for severe conditions... doing one service early means you do the next one early - but you must abide by the minimum set out in the servicing schedule...

the key to a health car is healthy inputs, like really good oil, good filters and constant observations...

your car is suffering at the moment due to an unhealthy part, which can effect other parts too...

so maybe post up a new thread: "help changing thermostat - Melbourne"

and maybe you could set up a mini DIY day if there is someone knowledgeable how can volunteer to be there...
