          Yes, but also:

          - Do you really know what you are paying for?
          - Is JDM really Japanese manufactured?
          - Is the JDM brand really their product?

...and not just in relation to wheels.

I used wheels because it is a topic that comes around regularly and it was easy to point to an example:
          - a manufacturer, YHI because they are a listed company and publicly disclose their activities who manufactures for...
          - a known brand, Enkei...commonly thought to be manufactured in Japan
          - and a supposed "knock-off" brand, Konig (but this is probably more due to lack of consumer knowledge)

so car parts industry is just like every other mass-consumer industry?

that is hardly a amazing revelation...

did you head the one about Foxconn???

Funnily enough, I didn't think anything of it - not from a manufacturing or design perspective (and again, the Watanabe / Rota and YHI examples) but it seemed to be a major revelation to others.

I thought the YHI one was particularly funny because in that particular discussion, it got quite heated about Konig knocking off Enkei. Anyway, you had to be there.

Anyway, which Foxconn "debacle"? There's been a few. Mind you, I love to use Foxconn as an example when someone makes the broadbrush statement that stuff made in China is crap...and I point to their iPhone that they so love, haha!

I would do this purely on principle if budget allowed for it (for a track car that is). At the end of the day that's often what it comes down to, not so much whether people have the money to buy better parts but whether they see enough value in more expensive/higher end genuine parts to justify the extra cost. And I agree that some peoples justification eg: wank factor to look cool is pretty sad. But some people prefer function and some prefer form, we are all different. I am more about function myself but won't knock someone that follows a different path, I probably just won't agree with it haha

I'm wondering where my wheels are made now.

Not on this forum and some of those discussions were face to face.

If you go to MX5CarTalk, you'll find a few of these discussions.

I've seen a couple of similar replica / knock-off / genuine discussions in a variety of forums I don't actively participate in...just read and have the odd giggle.

                            I'd agree with that too.
