    Too's ED Shi-bi-ku

    Hey Gang, I've never been on this forum before mainly cause I thought it was an Integra only forum. Anyway after having a little trawl through today I'm stoked to have found it! So many great cars, and lots of updates which is always inspiring.


    Anyway I thought I'd start, in more ways continue, my build thread here.

    This is my 1989 Civic. I bought it off a lady in Adelaide, it was bone stock with about 15 years of service history. I'm the third owner, and have spent the last two and a bit years doing little bits and pieces to improve it, mostly this has been refreshing the suspension.



    I'll post more pic as they come but here is a rough snap shot of how the car is.

    Sooo it should be noted I'm a little bit of Kaido fanboy at heart, so I'm pretty partial to certain styling cues. The car is pretty low-key since its my daily but I like the idea of having a different styling vibe when I hit the track: 80's race car, hence why I made the headlight covers

    I'm finishing a B18c2 conversion with an ITR gearbox at the moment...(this is a pic from a few weeks ago) which has been a long time coming, I bought the DC2 Vtir donor car in May last year!

      JDMST feels pretty dead, not many people posting, and also there are so many spam posts. Its kind of good to be in a Honda crowd too, already so inspired~!

          I'm a big fan of ED/EF Civics! Perfect mods so far and looking forward to the completion of the engine conversion.

            Thanks man. They were'e pretty easy to make, pretty much just looked at an "eyelid" DIY and covered the whole light... I didnt even bother taking the lights out to do it.
            Aluminium foil, cling wrap , spray oil, fibreglass kit. Done

            Thanks, Its taken time but its definitely turned it to quite the capable car now that the bushing, springs and shocks have been replaced. You used to have an ED before right? I remember it rocking some Integra or Prelude OEM 14's, It looked clean as!

              Pairs game


              Not much has been happening on account of the weather being pretty poor in ol' mate Hobart however something arrived at the courier depot today that did bring some excitement/progress to my end goal with the car.

              So for a little while now I've been playing the pairs game; Trying to find a couple of pairs of wheels to leave some semi-slicks on. The brief being pretty much that they needed to be light, cheap(compared to a set) and interesting...a pretty tall ask but I was never really in a rush to put the set together.


              Last year saw me swoop in on these TE37 14x6+38... and after mounting some tires on them I couldn't resist seeing what the car would look like if I had a whole set



              Which brings me to today.

              Finding another pair of TE37s was a pretty tall ask. Resolved in that fact when these Wedsport TC-005 14x6+20 popped up on Gumtree I had to jump on them. They were caked in brake dust but after a quick clean they came up okay, I'll probably give them another going over when its not pouring rain outside.

              I think they'll do nicely along side the TE37s. I haven't been able to find any info on the weight of the 14" versions but the 15x7" weigh in at 4.9kg/ea so they're getting close to being on par with the TE37's which in the same specs weigh 4.2kg/ea.
              So the pairs game paid off, I've managed to scoop up a sweet 'set' of wheels for under $600 bucks. The idea of a white-on-white setup is growing on me too.

                  Thanks, I'm pretty excited to get out to Baskerville with the B18, especially now that the track has been resurfaced.
                  Ah, small world hahaha! I cant say I'm a local by any means, I've only been here for about 4 years, on off.

                  I'm pretty much the sole ED representative down here in Hobart it seems, which is quite good. Keeps things low key for me, and leads to funning things like this:

                  Did people laugh at you when they saw you rock up in this at the track? Its not really a sports car -Old boy at the tire shop.
                  "...Na...yeah, I'm not really sure what a sports car is... I Managed a one-sixteen-three at Baskerville"

                    Took it for a drive today!

                    It was pretty wet, actually very wet so I didn't really do much but just feel it out on the road. De-powered rack is super nice, so much info through the wheel. The gear box is amazing, super smooth, really tight and the diff. was amazing! Loads of grip.

                    There is still a fair bit of work just tidying bits and pieces here and there but the fact I can drive the car, and it's without any issues, is really satisfying.
                    As promised...a little video of some cute road near my house.



                    So I'm booked in for another track day at Baskerville Raceway at the end of the month. I'm pretty excited to get a feel for the car with this significant bump in power and torque. I'm really going to just treat the day as a "getting to know your new car day", just feel it out.

                    I've been putting in a little work to get the car "ready".
                    Style wise...

                    Finally tidied up my headlight cover, and but a Bridgestone sticker on it.


                    Substance wise...


                    Installed my Nagisa Auto fender braces. I cant speak highly enough of the build quality of these. The brace comes with a backing place that holds the captive nuts for the front section that locates in the chassis, and the inside face of the brace locates against a pair of dimpled holes.

                    No drilling, a real sweet bolt in part.

                    ...and hopefully a bit of both.


                    Made a little gurney flap for a spare OEM wing I have. It was pretty tricky to get the curve right both across the rear of the wing and down the towards the ends of it, with a ton of patience and a bit of muscling I managed to get a result I can live with...

                      Baskerville track day


                      So another day at Baskerville. Quite a few thing have changed since I was here last, the track had been resurfaced, and I’ve fitted my B18 setup. With those big changes in mind I had two pretty loose objectives for the day: feel the car out with the new setup and maybe see what I can get out of it as far as a lap times in the afternoon sessions, with a rough goal of shaving 5 seconds off my old time , more as a result of the power/torque making that possible rather than my driving.

                      Here it is first thing in the morning, ready to roll with headlight cover, window net and plates removed.

                      So the morning sessions were divided up quite heavily since there was a full field of 40 cars, this was no surprise since there hadn’t been a track day here for a while as the track was being resurfaced. I was put in group B, based on my answer to the question “ have you driven here before…when?” so I was put in a group of pretty fast street cars. Group A was full of cars squeezing in shakedowns before a couple of time attack events being held down here next month which I’m pretty excited to check out.


                      First sessions.
                      I wanted to focus on running the “new” car, but really just I got lazy—probably for the best—and didn’t turn on my camera, or setup my timer. It should be noted up top really quick that at this point in the day I've had only about 400km behind the B18 setup which was mostly daily driving, stop start traffic stuff so I really had no idea what that car would be like at speed.

                      Just wow! All my thoughts/doubts surrounding “...have I made the right choice putting this engine in… I could have gone D-series with some intake/carb mods and a close ratio gearbox with an LSD…misc. misc. other plans/options” were gone.
                      Having a clear memory of what the car was like in this environment previously made the improvements really clear and all my worries about losing the car’s character, its rev happy nature, and noisy “spirit”, were gone. More torque up the hill was so nice, more speed on the straights, boxes ticked everywhere. Quietly gave myself a pat on the back for my backyard conversion and the outcome.


                      I felt my car was nice in the high and low speed sections, if that was my wing or my alignment I can’t really say for certain, the body roll however was more noticeable since I’m able to gather up more speed through corners than previously.

                      My current alignment is:

                      Front:
                      -1deg camber
                      2mm toe out [total]

                      Rear:
                      -1.5deg camber
                      1mm toe out[ total]

                      The morning sessions were spent sorting out my braking and shift points
                      , which to no surprise were very different to the old setup. I took it easy and tried to focus on what the car needed to be faster, the close gearing of the Type R box was quite interesting behind a B18C2, which delivers peak power about 1000rpm earlier than the Type R. This difference was pretty well illustrated to me when another driver took me out in his DC2 Type R in the afternoon sessions.



                      Late morning sessions
                      Things were still pretty busy as far as the groups being sent out, with a mix bag of mentally fast cars( time-attack shakedown runners) and some newer drivers, so I was a little distracted to say the least on some of my runs with trying to pass some people who weren’t clear on signalling to pass, and having faster cars blast past on straights before braking earlier than me into corners. While this was going on I began having some clutch slip issues so I was out for a little bit while I dealt with that and had lunch.
                      While goofing around at lunch I decided to look over my lap times for the late morning sessions. Things were looking up, consistent low 1:13’s! I hadn’t been doing much but trying things out in the car, feeling it out, and the times were “good”, no surprise given the power difference between the D15 and the B18.


                      In the afternoon I went for a ride a long with the owner of the previously mentioned Type R Integra. He had a fair bit of track experience, and I leant something right there: I needed to brake harder, like plenty harder. On a side note, ITR are amazing! I had never been in one, — actually the Integra was the 3rd VTEC equipped car I've ever been in, the other two being mine and an EM1 a friend's brother had some ten years ago— It was really amazing to see how ‘whole’ the car felt, unlike mine which definitely feels unrefined in many ways: build goals realised. After my little ITR fanboy was unearthed, I went out again with the idea of braking harder. Things changed, and there I was looking down the barrel of few 1:11’s.

                      With a few more sessions before the end of the day I took some people who were curious about the car out. It was nice hearing people’s expectations about the car…it still is just a little white hatchback to most which is great for my low-key daily vibe.


                      Out on my own again for a last few sessions.
                      Thanks to my window net I had my window rolled down, and in the afternoon heat this was an absolute joy. I tried to focus on being smooth and braking harder over all other things, and with less traffic with people were getting tired and/or breaking stuff this was a pretty golden time. With a couple 1:11 flats, it happened a 1:10.24. I. Was. Stoked! My loose goal managed[from what
                      I recall the guy in the ITR was running similar times ]


                      There always seems to be so much that I want to do but often get side tracked driving/socialising. I need to be more rigorous with noting and changing my tire temps vs. lap time and how the car feels. That said, its nice engaging with part of the scene here that I really enjoy, I probably need to cut myself some slack in regards to what I’m trying to do at these things: have fun with my car with some loose goals tacked on to keep things in perspective. I'm looking forward to having some more time with this setup!

                      Pros:
                      Build doubts crushed
                      Becoming familiar with the “new” car
                      Window net life is literally cool
                      New PB, heralding the new chapter: B-series life.


                      Cons:
                      Clutch issues
                      Busy field: not as many sessions as last time.
                      Being lazy with my camera

                      Ps. Hopefully this post wasn't too text heavy, I try to just bold the important bits so people just can skim over it and get the gist. I'll try dig through what little footage I have to see if there is anything worth showing.

                      What camera mounting system are people using for GoPro?? My Ebay special seems to wiggle around and I get a lot of creaking.

                        I'm sure once you get used to the car a couple more outings you'll be smashing the times now, crazy how you're running similiar times to the DC2R as well, good stuff

                          Thanks man! I really like driving at the track, its fun way to keep things in perspective as far as the build goes, and squashes most desire to drive stupidly on public roads.
                          Your S2000 looks really nice, no surprise I'm all for the ducktail wing. RUN IT! I know what you mean about small scenes, in Tasmania[Hobart] the car scene is pretty fragmented and the Honda scene is almost non existent.



                          I'm glad the setup was reliable. "I don't have many plans" for changing the setup on the car other that a couple things that will bolster reliability in a track setting, that way I can just keep pushing my driving.

                          Things I'm thinking about:
                          ☐ Making an intake duct for the bumper, potentially using the RHS indicator mounting hole.
                          ☐ Making a pair of guides[behind the bumper] directing air to the radiator
                          ☐ Brake cooling, most likely the Honed Air Guide Kit, or a DIY setup using silicone ducting.

                              Yeah I'm going to try run as many of these "open days" as the wallet allows. Good vibes at them, people just enjoying their cars.

                              I was a little nervous about running the car not long after the swap but getting ready for the day was good motivation to make sure everything was solid, and really there isn't a better place to get used to a new setup! Now just for more seat time.
