New SLR User - Need Advice - What to buy

    Gday guys,

Im preparing for a driving holiday around the south island of New Zealand in the next few months, and one of the things i want to do is to buy an SLR to capture the natural beauty we will surely encounter.

I want some advice from you guys as to what i need to look out for, and what it is i need in terms of lenses and features as a new user, who really is going to use it to photograph the scenery on a trip, and afterward just general usage.

I know the main piece, go and play with it and see if it feels good in your hands, thats great i can do that, im after advice on what's what, and what to buy... budget about 1200...

    Thanks guys

I havent looked at how much gear is lately but you will be looking at something very basic for $1200, I would definently look at the second hand market.

Then get as much practice with whatever you get before you go!

You should be fine for scenery with just a basic body, kit lense and a tripod ;D

      Second hand 400D and a 10-22mm Efs!

      should be about 1400 ish?

body is about $400, lens about 1k!

and as you get better you can upgrade the body and keep the lens which is great!

im not a canon boy, so im not 100% sure on prices.

haha dude thats the last thing you want to do!!

research is your friend!!! otherwise you will likely get owned by sales staff!

But yes getting an older lower end body and a higher end lense will give you the best results in your budget!

I wouldnt get a 10-20 lense if its going to be your only lense tho.

Personal preference I guess but id still prefer something like a 17-85 if i was only going to get 1 lense.

Still going to be able to take some very nice wide shots at 17 and if you use a tripod and photoshop stiching is going to be cake if you want really wide?

mind you i'm a bit of a nub myself

I still regret getting kit lenses. If you get into it enough later, you will too

my friend got a Canon 40d for around 700ish with lenses, and these things are worth quite a bit.

canon 40D are fkn awesome, or 50D
