Just got back today from the same trip.

    - If your driving at night, go the Pacific Highway, most of it is fenced off (less chance of animals running out in front of you). There are road works from Byron Bay to about Coffs Harbour
    - Try to avoid driving next to trucks. If its windy, they tend to swerve on the road
    - Trip is about 12 hours if you plan to do it straight, so take someone else with you that can drive some of it.
    - Speed cameras are signed with about 3-4 signs before the actually camera.
    - Most of the towns you pass through have a 50-60km/h speed limit, highways are 110km/h
    - Driving in Sydney is shit... like... really shit... there is like 5 highways going North, 5 going south, and 7 going West... not like Brisbane (1 North, 1 South, 1 West)... and don't get me started on driving in the CBD... if you have a GPS... USE IT!
    - The roads really are shit, pot holes everywhere... I think it was the M5 or M7 (Going west, so you don't need to worry about it) has a bump ever 10m (Like on a bridge)
    - Drivers are inpatient, if you haven't started moving as soon as the light goes green, they'll beep at you
    - Try to stick to main roads... just use your GPS

If I think of anything else... I'll edit my post.

Cheers for the generalization 45SET. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go and honk some stupid Queenslanders that don't know how traffic lights work.

                You both know its true

But I have to admit, the taxi drivers seemed "better" in Sydney then they are in Brisbane.

Its amazing how different traffic habits are in different cities.

But i think it comes more down to the fact people in Sydney aren't afraid to use there horns. Spend a day walking around the brisbane CBD, and you'll hear the odd horn go off... in Sydney, at least every minute there is a horn going off.

One that comes to mind was when someone tried to turn down a street (Across 2 solid white lines), the taxi behind him, honked (kept it down for atleast 30 sec), the person behind the taxi honked as he drove around the taxi and the turning car... and so did about 3 others cars that went around the taxi and the turning car.

Just got back from Sydney drive too~ horrible CBD drive. Its a No-Give Way/Every Car for themselves sort of thing. Drivers will still attempt to block you off even if you are half way through the take over.

Just be careful. As 45set said. if you got GPS. USE IT!

Done a Brisbane -> Sydney trip in May 2009. Took me 14.5 hrs. But then again, i got lost when trying to go to Byron Bay, stop over Coffs Harbour for the big banana (massive disappointment), lots of toilet breaks, lunch/dinner.....

Overall, decent effort as i'm the sole driver

pretty sure sydney ppl drivers are hoons, i was doing the speed limit and everyone was overtaking and speeding thru and everything..

tailgating, doing like 20kms over the limit! i was on the highway and ppl were flying past!

speeding through traffic, traffic was soooo bad and ppl were still going crazy lane to lane changing, while speeding, fast and the furious style lol.. only a small percentage was calm and following the speed limit...

                              thats my experience haha
