Direct Injection Engines

After reading a write-up on Porsche's new direct injection engine; was wondering why Honda dont adopt a similar concept?

Obviously price is an issue but there are gains to be seen everywhere:

Economy
Power
Emissions

I have a DC2R and the injectors are on the throttle body.

Was wondering if anybody had some thoughts on the topic of Honda bringing out a DOHC VTEC Direct injection engine?

Are there any negatives associated with this setup?

Germans have been doing direct injection for years. By year end 2009 ALL Volkswagen cars will be direct injection and most with turbo/supercharge technology.

direct injection is used on just about every diesel car these days. Dunno why it's not on petrol cars.. I guess we should wait for hydrogen cell cars

Check out the Porsche website; they should have a good visual explanation of it.

Instead of the injectors injecting fuel in the TB, it is done directly into the cylinder.

Proves more efficient.

Isn't the idea with Injecting in to the manifold runners (like our cars) to provide 'better' overall air fuel 'mix' before entering the cylinder?

Injecting into the intake manifold means not all the fuel can make it and can get caught or vaporize before ignition therefore the best air/fuel mix is achieved by sending fuel directly to combustion chamber.

Try THIS. It's a TSI (twin charge) video but might go on a little about direct injection. You'll be able to link to FSI videos which are the first generation direct injenction VW engines. Sorry if it's no good but I don't have the speed to browse at the moment.

BMW's current Petrol 3.0L 6cyl Twin-Turbo found in the 135i, 335i and X6 uses direct injection. As you say, there are benefits in fuel economy, emissions and performance.

Honda have worked on this idea before, not sure why it disappeared... It was called i-VTEC I and appeared in the JDM Honda Stream...
