probably a good start is to get a dvd with the THX calibration features in the features. i know the incredibles has it. it has some basic brightness and contrast calibration tests in it.
it does have a colour setting part as well but you need some coloured glasses to do that properly.
also has some audio setting parts which are quite good too.
start with that, there is some software available too but i cant remember what it's called, if you want to go further with it let me know and ill get the name for you.
video essentials is a good too but i haven't found any where to but it in aus, only on ebay. have you NeoNode? that the good thing about the THX is on quite a few dvd's.

I bought mine from www.ezydvd.com.au a while ago, it's out of stock atm though...
The most expensive is not always the best, but the best is always expensive.
Also another good DVD is the HQV Benchmark DVD, not a calibration tool though, but very good at detecting the shortcomings of the video signal processors in consumer products.
