I rekon the 17-85 would beat the 18-200 for image quality, not by alot though. If your on a budget get the 17-85 with the body and work out what lens combos you want/need later and get them then. If I were you i'd get the 40D and a 24-105 f/4L lens. The 40D is heaps cheaper then the 50D and alot better for value in my opinon.
