I notice every now and then when driving hard if i do a downshift from 3rd to 2nd, i get 2nd but when i release the clutch, it goes back to neutral. Is it possibly my tranny oil getting too hot? I notice this happens to me 1-2 times per session on last corner of wakefield. Opinions?

Alex how is your gearbox mount/rear mount? A worn mount making movement could also be a factor ?

Its poping out due to incorrect downshifting.BYP Racing & Developments

Alex, i've thought i've downshifted correctly myself once or twice, but it wasn't the case, i have suffered what you have.
Holding on to the gearstick a fraction longer will help and most likely prevent it 'popping' out of second.Last edited by MYDC5R; 20-08-12, 09:36 PM.

Most of the people above are likely correct. I'd look to your technique first, the alternative is that something is buggered inside your gearbox or something else is amiss in that area, such as the shift cables or clutch.
Oil temperature is unlikely to cause a gear to pop out, it might cause hard shifting but if the gear is engaged correctly it should stay held there by the detents inside the box, regardless of whether the oil is 200°C or not there at all.

Agree with most of the above. Second gear is a gear that feels the least counter-intuitive to perfectly heel toe and down shift into as it requires more accuracy, so during the heat of the moment you may not be properly engaging. Just have to focus on your technique and get into a good habit.
I find the opposite - after 45 laps or so it becomes harder to engage gears in its proper gate.eckoflyte
