    DC2R - Gearbox crunch going into 5th at 70km+

    Hi guys,

Hoping you can help with an issue that my mate is having.

He has a DC2R that crunches when going into 5th gear when going 65-70km+.
Anything under that speed and the gear slots in fine.

Every other gear is fine whether its shifting up/down besides 5th.

Tried going from 3rd to 5th and same scenario, only over 65-70km does it crunch.

After the crunch, he can take it out and put it back in (clutch still held in) with no crunch.

When the car is idle, you can move between all gears without dramas.

He said the car had a full service 1000km's ago. Issue started a few days ago.

I did a search but could not find any concrete info in regards to this issue besides crunching during gear changes in vtec.

Any help is appreciated guys, thanks.

he thinks it was done because every full service, his mechanic changes the gearbox oil.

his service included oil, oil filter, new p/s fluid, brake fluid and gearbox oil.

i suggested that maybe his mechanic had forgotten.

Would old/low gearbox oil only affect 5th gear at higher speeds though?

I would imagine that it would affect all gears. 1st to 4th is very smooth.

yes, it is an unusual symptom, which i initially would put down to 'user error'

haha thats what i thought at first too but after hopping in last night and driving it myself, i found it to be the same.

his had his car for 4 yrs now and it only started happening since mon/tues.

          strange.

yeah, strange - it means the 5th gear synchro or gear sleeve is damaged.

let's just hope it's the gearbox oil. his getting it changed this weekend.

if the 5th gear synchro or gear sleeve is damaged, this would crunch regardless of speed though right?

I too hav just started to experience this same problem started on sunday....?
so if anyone finds out exactly wat it is please let me or should i say US know.
all other gears are fine not even changing from 4th to 5th quickly and it crunches. only way not to make it crunch is if i hold the clutch in for a while like atleast 6seconds. i thought at first possibly it was the clutch... but my clutch has less then 10xxxkms on it.
and if it was the clutch wouldnt it affect the other gears?
                  cheers

id be checking the clutch master and slave cylinders the only other thing that can affect gear changes, could be something going on there , weird problem really .
