Zeal Suspension - DC2R

Hi

Looking for coilovers, quite interested in the Function X (Or XS) .. Anyone had any experience in a DC2? (Worth the extra cash?)

This thread sort of died but i thought it was a good idea.

Ive had experience with the Zeal Super Functions which are the higher model. I think they are great and easilly one of the best mods that ppl should go cheap on.

My mate who had a DC2R had the Function Xs and seemed to like them he went to track with them and never had any problems. I think the Xs is alot more suited to street driving rather than track so would be a softer ride. Also the valving is supposed to make the coilovers absorb bumps really well.

But in short "YES" worth the extra cash to get zeals.

I've used Function X before. I find it a little to harsh on the street, but it absorbs the bumps really well (not bouncy). On the track it performed well, not quite stiff enough for me as i like really hard suspension at Phillip Island. Compared to my previous suspension (JIC FLT-A2) the Zeals are much better imo.

i have the function Xs, all i can say is that they are the sest suspension ive ever had, in my dc2r ive used tein flex and these crap all over then, they just absorb the bumps so well, you hardly ever feel like that the sheels are skipping along the road on rough surfaces.

Ive not had a chick complain from them yet i have them set to 3 out 5 front, 4 out of 5 rear, and that perfect for the highway and the mountains.

So -- Considering I don't give a shit what the girl think (lol) do you think I'm better going for what they consider Race Spec gear or is Function XS hardcore enough? I thought the Race Spec stuff might be too harsh / not suitable for our roads (ie less performance due to setup beign too stiff) ..
I rode in Vincent's DC5 who had nice Zeal suspension and crazy spring rate, he said its all in the valve rate ... thanks guys, opinions are appreciated.

ive had function xs (base-model zeal's) on my dc2r for around 2 years, daily driven and ~ 2 track days per year. no problems or leaks whatsoever. i got them thru centrax - official endless/zeal distributer and very happy with their service. they were custom-ordered for me with 12kg/mm front and 8kg/mm rear zeal xcoils springs and appropriate valving, rather than the standard 10kg/mm front and 6kg/mm rears.
i also use vision front and rear camber kit for better setup-ability.

for winding road drives thru the hills on highest damper settings (6/6) the car skips and jumps too much over some poor quality roads, however 4/6 front and rear it feels optimum for me - ideal. on the track, like weezer, i like my suspension very firm, and found the hardest dampening (6/6) front and rear to work the best (this is with s-tyres of course), but after a few trackdays i think i could use something even a little more aggressive than the function xs's. however as a compromise between track,winding road and daily drive for me they are ideal.
super functions would probably be that little bit better for trackdays but worse daily-driving, maybe even not as suited to winding-road drives..

my advice is definitely research suspension before you buy, and spend as much as you can to get the best possible equipment. it will save you money in the long run doing it right 1st time hope this helps.

Thanks mate -- Appreciated -- Yeah I like to do it right the first time, don't mind spending a bit more as long as its worthwhile. If I get the Zeals it'll be through centrax, interesting you mentioned the harder spring rate, I'll consider that.

No one heard about Quantum?

Quantum are very good but very expensive....i believe they also set up for track rather than street. I think they even have the external reservoir.

the RM have the reservoir and are the hardcore version (track only) the RS is apparently a hard street / track coilover but very well valved .. hmm..

I've tried the following coilovers in DC2Rs:

Toda Fightex 10k/8k
Buddy Club Racing Spec 12k/8k
Spoon 14k/12k I think
Tein HA 10k/8k
Cusco Zero 2 I think 8k/6k

The Todas and Buddyclubs were awesome, preferred Toda for the lighter weight. The Spoons were amazingly good and comfortable given the spring rate. Bang for your buck Cusco Zero 2s were quite good.

anyone broken (or heard about someone else) a set of aluminium coilovers on the street? Does it just happen when you run out of suspension travel in a deep pot hole?

would not lowering the car to extreme's like so many cant resist doing reduce the risk significantly?

I ask cos i like the idea of saving weight but dont like the idea of 3.5k coilovers breaking on me!

I thought the fightex dampers were track only with higher spring rate? (remote reservoir?) .. interesting you mention them, I'd kinda pushed them to the side because I figure companies that specialise in suspension (and handling) would be the best in their field rather than a jack of all trades.

Aluminium coilovers are very strong still. They use an aircraft grade aluminium i assume. I know because i run super functions and i have run Tein Ra's as well which where aluminium as well. Never had any problems.
Suspension struts are very strong up and down but as soon as you have any side force onto them that is when they may bend or deform.

Anyone who says aluminium suspension will bend or deform normal street driving is full of shit IMO.
