You want something cheap atm that plays Giga-MP3s? Get the Sony MEXR1... I know what you're all saying... I hate Sony... Yes I hate it too but its so cheap at the moment and all you need is an external screen if you want to actually watch a DVD...
I've had one before, and the only thing I hated about it is that it takes a while to read a Giga MP3 disc... I actually replaced it with a JVC DVD deck with 3" screen, but have gone back to the Sony purely coz of the better sounding RCA outputs... Its a cheap alternative for now before something else better comes out next year...
But it looks really stock in a DC2R... I dunno how it'd look in a DC5R...
Positives: reads all formats DVD + and - R, VCD, CD, JPEG, and MPEG
Negatives: takes long to read Giga MP3 DVD, and its a Sony...

ooooh hope I'm not too late I did a lot of research into decks a while back and here are my findings, after lost of research on caraudioaustralia.com and other us car audio forums and through some personal experience I have found the following.
Eclipse: Used to be very good, but since there brand has picked up they have dropped in reliability, there lower priced models actually seem to be more reliable than the top of the line models. The top of the line models have features that most none audophiles will ever use.
Pioneer: Average really, good quality decks that are in the middle.
Alpine: Would not reccomend them anymore, just too expensive and built like crap now. The older ones are great but is it worth forking out 500 bucks for a used deck with no warranty ?
Nakamachi: Very good, but vey expensive, and very basic. But you need to have good speakers apowered buy a quality amp to actually see the benefits. Some Nakamchi decks do not have internal amps so you need an external power source.
Denon: Excellent quality decks, very basic appearance and not many feautres. Up there as one of the very best in sound quality though.
Clarion: the normal ones used to be good up till the 35 series, the new ones really are crap. That is unless you move up the HX series which is over 1 grand.
Kenwood: Very good value for money, most decks come with great features and are known to be very reliable. Basic decks offer very good sound quality. Best bang for your buck in my opinion.
Sony: bottom of the range cheap shit really, but the top of the line decks are actually not to bad. Id get one if you could buy it cheap.
So in my opinion you should get a Kenwood, best value for money.
The thing to keep in mind is this your sound qulaity is dependant on your deck, speakers, amp, cabling, etc etc its a money pit. If you just want decent sound but dont want to start upgrading the rest then dont spend more than $300.00 ona deck.
Lastly do not buy from overseas. Get one locally, trust me you will thank me if anything screws up.
I went through an audio phase spent a shit load on it, eehhh but at least it sounds good.
New hobby is detailing. stay tuned for a pictorial tutorial/Oo ___H___ oO\

thanks guys. yeh i love my headunit. you can change the button colours to light up green or orange. orange matches dc5 dash pretty well.
reason im selling is cause im getting a carputer. i was going to get a single din motorised touch screen and run a single din headunit but i couldn't find one i liked.
like kaveh said, the alpine units now are apparently crap as. they look the same as the older units but they have reduce functionality and sound quality heaps. there's a guy on clubrsx who frequents the audio forum and everytime u mention alpine he speals a long bitch about how much they're crap now. apparently mine, the 9835 and the other one that is similar to the 9835 were the last good ones from alpine.
i dont really like the look of any other headunit. there's a nice pioneer one in the premier range but its not sold in australa
almost JDM spec, y0!
