    (problem) Rattling noise

    Hi guys,

    Car: dc5r

I start the car up in the mornings and wait for about 5 mins for it to warm up.

During this time, I can hear this loud shaking/rattling sound coming from the front of the car but I cannot identify what it is.

The sound goes away after the warm up period and I do not hear it again until the next morning when I start it again.

I have checked my exhaust to see if hangers are loose and this does not seem to be the problem.

can anyone gimme a hand as to what it is and direct me in what and where to look for?

    Thanks in advance guys.

Is it a feint rattling or like a ticking tapping noise.
Its hard to diagnose sound problems over the internet. Can you explain the noise in any other way. Anything else that sounds similar to it?

Could be valve clearances but i dont know much. Maybe someone more knowledgable can say.

Do a search for a rattling clutch line (thread). This is usually the cause of the rattle that your describing in a DC5. If its not the clutch line, come back and we can re-diagnose

What I used to experience in my other car was when my cat went the honeycomb structure inside started to rattle.

It could be this until it heats up...

apply pressure to your front number plate and let us know if it goes away.

thanks for the quick replies guys, i will check it out and report on it

            more info:

the sound is like metal shaking/vibrating, its definitely not tappets because it sounds much more mechanical than that and is quite distinctive.

Valve adjustment was carried out only a few months ago so i dont think its that...

Well as age gets to your cat - (hot cold changes; bad fuel) - the honeycomb structure inside the cat can break down and apart.

Hence when exhaust rushes through it the broken pieces bounce around in the cat. (until heated then stop due to expansion)

                    My diagnosis...

BTW - CAT is in the middle of the exhaust - big cylinder thing. can miss it.

                    Have a listen...
