Hey guys,

Ive noticed that when i hit the gas in first and second gear that the car will randomly struggle/clunk as if it was running out of fuel or a really incompetent driver was in the seat, but if i floor it, its ok. All the other gears are ok too.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

the oxygen sensor needs to be replaced but it was happening prior to that, or was that a problem leading up to the broken oxygen sensor ?

map and tps ? sorry im a n00b.

how to check MAP and tps? take them out of the TB? or just thoroughly clean the TB will do?

MAP sensor= manifold absolute pressure sensor
TPS = Throttle position sensor
TB = Throttle Body

it sounds completly like an o2 sensor issue, that is WHY i said that in my first post, eh?

as you say, it was occuring before, but that can also be a symptom of the o2 sensor slowly degrading over time...

Oh, i didnt realise the sensor affected the car in that way, thats why i intended to hold it off to next service and didnt consider it a problem causing the struggling. Ill get a sensor and see how that goes.

the o2 is part of the feedbak loop for the ECU to run emissions friendly fuel maps(called 'closed loop')

this is opposite to what happens at full throttle when the ECU runs at its full power fuel map (called 'open loop')

in 'closed loop' the ECU is taking incorrect signals from the o2 sensor, it can put too much or too little fuel in, and gets really confused,

it *thinks* it has put more fuel in, then tries to sense it at the o2 sensor, but cant *see* it, so it puts more in... leading to the struggling/spluttering you have described...

in 'open loop' the ECU ignores the o2 sensor and uses a set RPM/fuel table to decide how much fuel and ignition advance to apply...

does the problem occur all the time, or only when not at full throttle?

what made you think the o2 sensor needed to be replaced anyway?

this problem only occurs at low rpms in the first and second gear.

I went to the mechanic and he used a computer to check what the engine light meant, which is the o2 sensor needing replacing.
