The RAM effect is much more of a market speil, unless you're travelling at 123456km/h, the RAM effect from a non forced induction system is practically nil, at normal atmospheric pressure. What you do get is Cold Air, which improves performance, which then people incorrectly attribute it to the RAM effect.
I can tell you another disadvantage of facing forward, the trumpet edges are brittle and if you have an off, it can crack from the gravel. Mine cracked but fortunately did not break away, so I managed to expoxy it back.
Finally, all that said, I have mine facing forward anyway because it looks cool when you look into the front bumper...MFactory Performance Products
