Mugen's recommendation in tuning the dc5r

Some of the reasoning behind the parts and seems all quite reasonable from the look of it. For those who are just begining to tune dc5 this should be a good guide.

Proposal for the Block Complete Tuning

Complete tuning by each block; we've started it on the Honda & Acura new generations.

Completely renewed design of engine, transmission, platform, suspension, etc.

Honda's (Acura's) new generations "Integra Type-R & RSX" "Civic Type-R & Civic Si" are indeed a new generation sports car equipped with an unparalleled degree of completeness. In the world of tuning, a generally accepted theory up to now has been to simply replace or modify the parts or components to suite its customers' requirement or preference. With the new generations, we believe that this approach has became obsolete and extremely obstacle to meet the needs of the changing time. As a result of such progression, a half-measured approach may result in inadvertent affect on the vehicle balance. Therefore, Mugen will develop a complete tuning of not only each single parts but also of each block as its objective. This is the Mugen's answer for tuning the new generations.
The leader of Honda's sports spirit, the new "Integra Type-R." (Acura RSX)

Mugen had initiated the development of the sports parts (for both race and street uses) early in parallel with the development of the new Integra. As one phase of the development activity, Mugen entered the Tokachi 24 hours racing with two MUGEN Integra Type-R cars as "BEAMS Racing" held on July 21st and 22nd soon after the announcement made (on July 2nd) that Mugen will enter the race. As a result, one of the cars won the pole position on the starting grid and the cars won 1st and 2nd places (CA) in the race. The result had proven that our cars have a very high potential which inspired us to go ahead with further development. Also in the year 2002, Mugen provided technical support and supply parts and components designated by H.O.A. (Honda One-make Association) for "Verno Exciting One Make Races" event in Japan to organized by Honda as well as special parts and components for other various race events.
Mugen will make a presentation and proposal on "Block Complete Tuning" as a new tuning approach for the new generations.
    (1) "Engine (intake and exhaust)"
    (2) "Chassis (suspension, brakes)"
    (3) "Aerodynamics (aero parts)"
    1. Pursuing a higher performance of intake system "i-Tuning"

The i-VTEC engine induces more fuel and air to get more power.
i-VTEC is a system maximizing the intake pulsation and inertia effect and increases the charging efficiency in order to realize the high power output by precisely controlling the intake valve timing. This is a very high level of technical system which achieves a high power output obtainable only by optimum tuning of various elements. Mugen has achieved a phenomenal increase of its potential performance as well as low exhaust emission not only by "intake tuning" and "exhaust tuning" but also with combination of ECU which provides an optimum valve timing for the system. This is the "intake and exhaust block tuning" approach proposed by Mugen.
    2. Pursuing precise and direct handling.

Uncompromising road-holding and direct feeling of handling.
It is a new generations of an excellent handling with high body rigidity and high level of balancing. It also emphasizes the good handling on winding road and race circuit rather than on the ordinary street use and seeks a precise and direct handling at a higher level. This is the Mugen's development objective. Ordinary rubber bush which has a large compliance has a tendency of somewhat weak response to the steering maneuver. Also since it is of a such structure that the suspension geometry aggressively control both the front and rear suspensions, it demands a higher level of driver's control. Furthermore, the aluminum brake caliper has an advantage of light weight while it has some weakness in its hardness. Considering those usual characteristics, it leads to the following development objectives and tuning items in order to improve the preciseness and high response characteristics of the steering control. (1) Select a high grip tire (POTENZA RE01) matching with forged wheel of its exclusive size to attain a igh cornering power. (2) Increase the stabilizer spring rate, install the tower bar, increase the spring rate and optimize the damper's damping characteristic to increase the roll stiffness. (3) Adopt a front upright strut (with knuckle arm)' install tower bar and increase the hardness of respective mounting rubber bushes or use pillow ball instead to increase the overall rigidity. (4) Realize a direct feeling handling by increasing the hardness of the steering gear box mount. And (5) in conjunction with the improvement of cornering performance, increase the braking and deceleration feeling, arrange and select optimum friction materials to make harder brake pedal touch feeling and to improve the performance against the fading, and further adopt a micro mesh brake hose to attain a high reliability and hard pedal touch feeling in order to increase the overall braking performance,
    3. Aerodynamic parts for demonstrating its performance at the races.

Aerodynamic performance parts aid to improve grip and reduce the co-efficient of drag.
The development objective is to exactly develop the aerodynamic performance parts to compete in the actual races.
The requirements for the "Type-R"(RSX) to compete on the circuits are as follows.
    (1) Without increasing the CD value, reduce the CL value (generates a down force) to increase the traction.
    (2) Make the adjustment of lift balancing possible by installing variable camber wing.
    (3) Design (intake duct) to induce cold and fresh air for improving the engine performance.
    (4) Increase the cooling performance of engine and brakes. Basing on these concept, Mugen has realized a design form with attractive appearance supported by the collaborative works of the designers in addition to the wind tunnel testing and analysis performed during the design and development stage. The design must effectively function with the engine performance and its running performance. This is "the aerodynamics block tuning" being proposed by Mugen.

Without increasing the CD value, achieved the reduction of the CL value (generating the down force).

For the race specification, smaller mirrors, lower vehicle ground clearance, etc. are effective in achieving the followings,

Reduction of CD value by 11%
    0.323
Reduction of CL value by 168%
    -0.056

    AERODYNAMICS for DC5

Further Tuning of the Race-proven Integra Type R Aerodynamic Modifications

Improved aerodynamics of the DC5s have been attained by a high volume of repeated testing. In the Tokachi 24-hour Race on 20 July 2001, shortly after the debut of the Integra DC5, two DC5s of the Beams Integra team lined up along the starting grid with MUGEN-produced aero parts on board. The aerodynamic contribution made by these modifications over an arduous 24 hours helped the DC5s record a one-two finish in Class Four.
The aero parts used that day had not had prior wind tunnel testing, and yet the front bumper, side spoilers, rear wing (with an extreme angle of inclination corresponding to driver needs), and canards (small fins installed near the corners of the bumper) on the front bumper performed excellently. After the race we conducted measurements of the parts, with their settings unchanged, in a wind tunnel and verified that considerable down force was produced without the CD value deteriorating and that the force was distributed equally (50:50) between the front and rear of the car. This shows that MUGEN’s designs performed well under actual conditions, and the aero parts we sell are an extension of this constant real-world testing and modification process.
Smoothing air flowing below the body is key to producing down force

To smooth air flowing below the body of the car, we first developed an under tray integrated into the front bumper assembly. The leading edge of this tray is designed to produce vortexes so that the air passing beneath the body will flow straight and smoothly. Side spoilers are also employed to stop air escaping from beneath the vehicle and generating unwanted turbulence.
The down force generated by the rear wing for the extreme racing conditions in Tokachi seemed slightly excessive in consideration of general use, so it was necessary to find the lowest height that provided effective down force in the next wind tunnel testing session. As a result, the rear wing has been relocated to the optimum position and mounting coordinates have been modified to be more variable, allowing lift balance to be effectively adjusted depending on the circumstances.
For the front bumper, the opening was slightly narrowed to further reduce air resistance, but not to the extent that it affected cooling performance.
As a result, without adversely affecting the CD value, the mounting of MUGEN aero parts improves the CL value to achieve a minus lift of -0.047 in contrast to a standard CL value of 0.083 (both values are based on our in-house measurements).
Moreover, consideration has also been given to the shape of the bumper for improving power. The air-duct opening located at the boundary between the front bumper and hood has been modified to be slightly larger so as to draw more fresh air, and installation of the air cleaner and box dedicated for the Integra DC5 together with the aero parts allows all intake characteristics, including intake air temperature, to be finely tuned.
a/ Smooth wind flow over the wing face shows that the rear wing is located at the most effective position within the straightening flow layer. –DC5 Rear Wing
b/ Aerodynamic performance parts for spirited racing.
c/ Provision of fin-like canards near the corners of the front bumper allows greater down force to be produced. -DC5 Canard Fin
d/ MUGEN’s aero parts mounted on Integra DC5s in the Tokachi 24-hour Race. Data obtained in this race led to further development and improved aerodynamic performance of commercially available products.
e/ Geometry of the rear wing using 3D curves that is also employed in GT cars. This produces an effective down force without increasing the CD value. –DC5 Rear Wing
f/ Geometry of the under tray has been determined through repeated wind tunnel tests and actual driving tests. –DC5 Under tray

Basically they try to tell you that to get full mugen parts :P
They also stated that IHE mod on stock ecu actually makes the car running lean on high rpm and lose the power curve

I agree with Mugen's tuning philosophy, but I cannot see any value when their total combined parts add little value overall. Total balance can be achieved without being brand loyal whilst outperforming what Mugen has setout. Mugen in general is no different to tuning excellence. Certain specific components are cream of the crop, others are simply rubbish.
