Weird sound when turning on the car.

    Hey Guys...

I have this problem for a while now, its doesn't seem that serious as the car drives perfectly fine.

Anyways, I hear this scratching sound when I switch on my DC5R, this only happens when I haven't driven the car for awhile, usually overnight. What it sounds like is, when you turn the key in the ignition all the way but not letting it go and it makes horrible sound. But obviously I am not doing that.

    Any idea guys?

    thanks

Can you record this issue with a digital camera/video? That would help us.

In terms of sound: Just going by what you are saying, it sounds like a starter "crunching" but it doesnt coincide with your situation.

Good idea to record mike, does seem initially like the starter motor.

        Timing chain tensioner?

How many K's has the car done?

          Umm....

Let's just say that you engine is still on without you knowing. And accidently you turn on the engine it makes the horrible scratching sound.
          Thats what it sounds like.

Kms that its done is a touch over 80k.

so when you start the car it makes 'that' sound - then the engine is running and the noise goes away?

maybe the starter solenoid not disengaging immediatly?

I really want to help but what you are typing doesnt make any sense. Maybe its cause I dont understand your Australian slang :X lol

Seriously though, find a digital camera and post a video (some cameras do video).

The sound only appears when I haven't driven the car for more than 10 hours and the car needs to warm up. Noticed it happens in the morning

i think it has something to do with cold temps and the oil?

                  hope that helps

He's saying imagine turning the ignition key while your engine is already running.

^ I think tink is right, something is not disengaging.

Does the sound change when RPM's change? Is this at idle. Im not familiar with the K too much but somebody mentioned something about the tensioner. Look into that.

I get the same problem after a few days of not driving and when its very cold.

Only does it once frmo start up and thats it.

"Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horse power is how fast you hit the wall, torque is how far you take the wall with you."

I say its either the starter or the TCT:

Anthony, you don’t need to stress yet, many cars make unexpected noises during winter while the engine is in the warm up process. As long as you are not hearing it when warm and you’ll be fine. The best solution is taking it to a mechanic whom you know well and get him to start the car when it’s cold. I’ll say do it in the morning so the car cools down faster.
