Odometer

I have a slight feeling my odometer is clocking the kilometres too fast. Just wanted to know if anyone has experienced this problem.

I took my folks car today...and driving from my home to the same place...i remember my car clocking around 18km...whilst the camry clocked on 13 km.

My car is no longer under warranty and i have a feeling this has been happening for a while....what can i do??

if i am correct...for every 1000km i travel...my car is saying that i have travelled 382km too much on the odometer.

anyone with any suggestions on what i should do??

i am currently using 18" on my DC5R...but even when i was using the original rims...i suspected the odo was not correct already

Well for one, running bigger rims will effect your reading...

the bigger the Wheel diameter the less K's you clock . the speed display will be wrong and odometer as well.
I was doing 90 and the cops said i was doing 97 ,just a little bigger wheels

i understand that...i dont have any issues with the size of my wheels and the speedo reading.

i believe i may have a problem with the odometer reading. how does it affect the reading Mo?? Although my rims are bigger, the overall diameter is the same right? becoz i am using a thinner tyre. Then how will bigger rims affect the K's i clock?

what size tires are you using on your 18"s?
i just did a couple of calcs on http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp
and if your on 225/40/18 your only .8% different in the opposite direction to what youve found.
but if your on 215/35/18 then youd be 3.8% in the direction youve worked out. but that not enough of a difference as what youve worked out.

just another thought, did you work out it was 18km on the odometer or did you reset one of the trip meters, because the DC5R odometer only counts a full km travelled. it doesnt show decimals. which could put you a bit off and combined with your tire size could be causing the differnce.

running larger diameter wheels will cause your odometer to clock slower since you are covering more distance that what your stock diameter wheels would cover for the same number of revolutions.

for example if a stock diameter wheel covered 1.8m and your larger wheel covered 2.0m per revolution, your car thinks you covered 1.8m when in actual fact you travelled 2m... hence for every 200km your odometer would show that u travelled 180km

thats partly correct, but the tire size has a lot of effect, like i said in my post.
these are some common 18" tires
225/40/18 is very close, .84% slower than stock
235/45/18 is too slow, 5.8% slower than stock
215/35/18 is too fast, 3.8% faster than stock

matt:: i didnt reset the trip meters, i simply took the difference between the odo reading from the moment i got on the freeway and got off the freeway. Therefore i would give a deviation of 1-2km. However if the reading was off by 3km over that small distance, imagine how significant it would be over the long term. Assuming my figures are correct and the problem has been there since the car was purchased, my current odo readings are around 72000km, the odo should actually only be around 53000km...that around 20000km difference...thats HUGE!!!!

05dc5S:: If thats was the case i would be over the moon, travel 200km and the odo only shows 180km...but that is not the case...in fact...i suspect the problem is the opposite to your example...which is why its frustrating me...

Sometimes i drive and i am looking at the odo...and its just clicking away..and i am thinking to myself...damnn...that was definitely not 1km...

yeah there could be a problem, i would just try and get a more accurate measurement first.

you didnt say what size tires you have on your 18's either that could be adding to the problem.

if i was you i would put the stock wheels back on if you have them (or find some) and do some controlled tests to get an accurate idea.

if there is a problem, i wouldnt worry about being in or out of warranty, start making noises to honda.

i am using 225/40/18/....i made sure i was using the tyres that would create minimal difference between my actual speed and the speed coming up on the speedo

hrm thats the same size i use, and your right they are the closest to the stock.
time to whip out the white coat and do some scientific tests i think
