what do gauges do??

Hi everyone just a new comer in the whole Type R and mods
wanting to know what does gauges do?
eg. the water temp and oil ones i see alot in type R
1. what do they do?
2. How do u read them?
3. what is the use of it?

1. they tell you what temp things are running at
2. errrr same way as you read any numbered items?
3. well allows you to not blow yourengine and keep your engine in the optimal temp range
