    CV Boots/Joints Replacement

    Hey guys,

Just doing some routine maintenance on my car this evening and noticed a LOT of grease on the inside of my rim. So I investigated further and found this:

My outer CV boot has a huge tear in it and has expelled grease everywhere.

I'm just wondering how urgent this is in need of replacing? And how easy is it to source and install a CV Boot given that i have the right tools?

Would i be better off getting a whole new axle?

Pretty sure you can just take it to a drive shaft joint and they can replace the whole boot thing.

Well. Its just a CV boot tear. If you can remove the driveshaft yourself it wouldn't cost more than $40 to get the guys at a CV repair place to do it. You don't need to replace the whole shaft if all the interior components are intact. A word of warning, those driveshaft nuts are extremely difficult to remove. In terms of doing a DIY boot replacement, I can't give any guidance on that. Also, how urgent is it, its quite. You could still drive the car if the components are intact however run the risk of minimal lubrication with each revolution.

Drive shaft joint? I'm assuming this isn't a regular mechanic?

I'm assuming the CV is still all in tact as there is actually some grease still on the bearings themselves. Althought i can't really say how long it has been like this. I'll call around tomorrow and see what i can organize with a CV repair place.

        Thanks for the info.

Just pull the axle out and take it to have a new boot put on it. I can give you a hand getting it out if you need it, as Norm says the hub nuts can be difficult but up until recently I had never met one my 1m long 3/4" drive breaker bar couldn't handle.

+1 for the CV Centre in Dandenong. Can't comment on the guy's workmanship, I only drove the car with the axles he worked on for a short period because Kswap, but he's a nice guy and that counts for a lot in my book.

Tom, if you could give me a hand or even lend me your 1m long shaft of steel and your breaker bar (If you trust me with it) that would be amazing. Most of the quotes ive been getting have been ~$150.00 and some people are even recommending a new axle all together. I still have a couple brake additions i need to make to the car but that can easily be done while the axle is not in the car.

Whens the soonest time you could come past? Or meet up?

If you don't see this by the morning i'll shoot you a message.

Actually Tom, that day, the socket slipped off a tiny bit on the second bounce of you on standing on the end of the breaker bar...

When you bounced down on the breaker bar that second time, that tiny slip turned into a big slip ...
I tried to push it back onto the socket but it wouldn't budge with you standing on the end and but with you bouncing on the end, on the 3rd bounce, it had slipped off and thats why it was somewhat stripped.

So I wouldn't call it defeated just yet!

Back on topic, I would suggest soaking it in WD40 every night you can get in, leading up to the day you attempt to remove it.
I soaked mine for a solid week straight, whilst shopping around for a 3/4" 36mm socket, by the weekend, it came off on the first push!

Axel nuts can be a PITA to get off. On my old EK Civic we used my breaker bar plus slipped an extra pipe over the end to make it 2+ metres. The crack when it finally goes was a little unsettling but I was glad I still had both my eyes at the end
