e.g. if i always check my oil on the same surface, without starting the engine, i can always tell if the oil level has gone down (relative to where i remember i saw it the last time i checked)...

I like to have my cold oil level at the top dot - or above the top dot when racing.
How much above are we talking? 5-10mm's or ?

well, since the distance between the dots is around 10mm, i doubt it is gonna be that much!

but simply; if you want to know a distance, it would be 1mm ??? (maybe a "dot width"?) but if it goes over that, i don't really care.

      experiment:

next time you change your oil, fill the oil to the bottom dot (slowly, as it takes time for all the oil to sink). then using a graduated measuring device, see how much oil it takes to get to the top dot... this might help you know how much to put in next time you notice it dropping (if it drops that is...)

I had a chat to Manu, for those of you that know him, he knows what he's doing.

He said to check it when cold, so the oil seeps back into the sump - but yeah, I've been told my current oil level is fine amd probably good for the twisties.

I keep getting mixed opinions about check oil in therms of cold engine or warm engine. What's best?

I dont bother with it being hot or cold. but i let it seat for 15 minutes on level before checking. So all the oils drops to the pan. And if im topping up a car i go 3/4 from lower dot to top dot. Just incase there more oil not in the pan. example the filter. Funny thing my Dc2R doesnt drink oil at all. Less can be said for the CRV. Dam B20's.

I would have thought 1-2mm over is neglectable. I thought you were talking well over the top dot.
