    Oil/Service Help

So I'm planning a service in the coming weeks, and I was wondering what you guys could recommend in terms of oils and filters.

I'll be doing engine oil, oil filter, and gearbox oil.

I'm not too cluey on oils and weights etc. so I was hoping for some input. Should I go fully synthetic? or are there better options?

    Car is a DC5R with about 100,000ks

    Thanks in advance.

Before we start, have you checked the oil threads here?

Had a look over them. Everyone seems to have a different idea of the ideal weights and brands.
It's more an inquiry as to what difference the weights make and what would be the best option.

        Re: Oil/Service Help

If it is just a daily driver and you do no track work, look into Penrite HPR5 (5W40) & Trans Gear 75W80.

If you are doing track work, look at Penrite 10 Tenths 0W50 or 10W40 & Pro Gear 75W85.

If you are unsure as to what the viscosity means, a simple google search will explain everything for you.

then simply stick to what the manufacturer recommends, unless you are using you car for a special purpose.

How often are your service intervals? Every 5,000kms or 10,000kms?

What are your driving habits? eg. daily driving with the occasional squirt, weekly scenic driving in the hills or a bit of track work.

Thank-you! I have a mate who can "acquire" these exact oils, so will be perfect.

I only just got the car. And I'm not sure how often it was serviced with the previous owner (I can assume often but you never really know without logbooks).

I was thinking of doing 5,000ks for a few services, just to make sure everything was ship shape, then going to 10,000 once I know its been running on good oil and is nice and healthy.

And it's just a daily driver.

Stick to OEM Honda engine oil and gearbox oil, it is the best for dailys/weekend. Let us know how you go

I service my car every 5.000kms, 02 DC5R with 109k kms on it. I use Nulon 5w 40 fully synthetic oil and honda oem oil filter if that helps
Have a read of my build thread

guys this is not a WHAT DO YOU USE thread.

any posts that do not address the OPs questions:

                      1. Should I go fully synthetic?
                      2. are there better options?
                      3. what difference the weights make?
                      4. what would be the best option?

                      will be removed.

You probably won't find any benefits with fully synthetic engine oil for a daily driver. Any mineral within the 5W-30, 10W-30, 5W-40 or 10W-40 range would do you fine as long as you change if often within 5,000kms. Switching to something synthetic for a longer service interval also sounds sensible. I like your suggestion.

For gearbox fluid, there are plenty of good reviews on OEM Honda MTF, Redline MTF, Amsoil and others online. Pick something with the correct weight specifications as OEM (70W-80) and you'll be fine.

Filter wise, I prefer anything apart from the cheapo in-house brands. Honda OEM oil filters are always a good choice.
