Tyre to wheel width - effect on performance?

Ive been researching tire sizes for my wheels 15x7 at 43 offset.
Ive come across 225/45/15. Now the over all height is fine. And rubbing shouldn't be a issue. And according to the tire site it fits on a 7" rim.
But Ive read that having a tire to wide for the rim can actually decrease traction and handling. From a track point of view would a 225/45/15 decrease handling,traction over a 205/50/15 as its to wide for the rim.

From my understanding a 7" rim should fit anything from 225-195 but ideally you want a 215 or 205. I have 225's on my 8" rim and it still bulges a bit.

Regarding the traction part im not 100% sure, but i assume you would want a similar width tyre to your wheel. 225mm ~8.9in so on an 8" rim there would only be about 0.5 inch overhang on each side, where as on a 7" rim there would be almost 1 inch overhang on each side.
I think with that much extra width there would be a lot of sidewall bulge and probably flex meaning a sloppier ride. In other words, there is not enough rim to support your sidewall properly.

Im after more grip over my 205/50/15. I have KU36's Atm. And 225/45/15 are rare tire size. Suggestions?

I have 225/45 on a 17x7 and Iv tracked on it. It's perfect IMO. However now I'm running 235/40 on 9". 225 you should be fine but you could run a 215/45 with a little stretch. Flat fitted rims aren't overly good looking in my opinion, run a little stretch!

I don't think 215 will stretch it dude, pretty sure it would even bulge a bit.
Then again, this kinda varies between tires.

Karl i'm also running a 225/45/15. Hankook Ventus R-S3's to be exact.
Are you considering the Toyo r888 because you are going to a track day? Or is this for your daily?

If it's for daily and not track, you could consider Toyo Proxes R1R or Hankook Ventus R-S3.

Cars weekend car. hoping to get into tracking soon after i get it how i want it. Car doesn't get driven enough to have daily's and track tires.

a Kuhmo V70A is an example of a square tyre, which will work the least best on a too wide rim.

why not 225/50ZR15 - toyo says these are suited most to a 7in rim?

My bad, forgot the part about it being about 15". Should help you decide with sizes but check other people on 15s. Rookie should be able to help you a fair bit
