    Well, when you think about it, it's not that hard to see why.

    You car is putting the same amount of pressure onto the road, so if you increase one dimension of the contact area, then the other will be decreased so the actual contact area will be the same (tyre pressures and other variables remaining equal). Just the contact area will be a different *shape*.

              applying simply physics might simplify things perhaps.
              using: Force = Mass X Area.

              in our case, force is the cars mass X gravity. this is a static number as it doesnt change much at all.

              so to keep force constant, mass and area have an inverse relationship.
              if increasing the tyre width, there is less mass to be exerted per area squared, therefore, a narrower contact patch. if u wanted to increase contact patch by going wider and maintaining the longitudinal aspect, then greater mass would be required.

                    My ITR is the same as well, it currently has 205/50/15 Kuhmo v700's on the stock rims. While the grip of the tyres is superb, the feel is not.

                    While this may be acceptable on the track, i find it annoying on the street.
                    Both freakygeek and myself run much higher tyre pressure than normal, so the disadvantages of a wider tyre would only be excaerbated if you followed the manufacturers recommedations on tyre pressure.

                    Freakygeek's ITR with re010's (195/55/15) on stock wheels is a world of difference.

                      ive read the stuff on those links and it says that contact patches with sharper corner give better cornering traction and grip and less straight line stability while more rounded contact patches give better straight line traction..

                      it also says that when the patch becomes extreme like a butterfly then it gives even more cornering grip.

                      sounds good to me

                      so the lower the profile the sharper the patch corners.. also the design of the shoulder of the tyre can effect this too..

                      i think the "feel" being crap with 205's might be more related to sidewall balooning/flex than the patch?

                      this needs more thought..

                        I run around 36-38 psi in my tyres.

                        There is minimal sidewall flex at all.

                        Track down a set of 195/55/15 re010 and feel the difference, you will not want to drive on another set of street tyres again on OEM wheels.

                              I wondered who would buy them. I bought a set in Aug/Sept and they said that there were only 8 or 13 tyres left in the country then.

                              If I change the nut behind the wheel then my sloppy lines improve and I can get some consistency to sort out my iffy handling, my worrying lack of braking ability goes away, after that I can start fretting about my suspicious lack of straight line grunt.
