    Engine bearing selection

Hello to the engine builders out there!

Im about to start my main conrod bearing slection for my turbo B18C2 motor and am not sure what clearance to select. I have a honda workshop manual which suggests a clearance range of 0.0013"- 0.0020". I was planning on selecting bearings for the largest clearance as i dont want issues with not enough oil coating the bearings under high load high rpm operation. Is there any negatives to this selection?

u use the code from the rods and the crank to determine the right size rod bearing... + u should clay it after u purchase it to make sure they are perfect.

you do the same for the main bearing using block and crank... .

do it once.. do it right

no offence, but to me it sounds like a hot rod builders strategy, not a high-po high-tech 4 cylinder strategy...

loose clearance might also lead to UNDER-oiling under high load high rpm operation...

best to make sure your crank is perfect, like within microns, and match "the parts to the parts", not the parts to a certain level of clearance...

        middle road grasshopper, middle road...

(mind you - i have never 'built' an engine, only heard about it...)

if i am wrong, i stand to be corrected...

maybe contact a honda specialist - like Adrian @ Toda Ausatrralia or Dyno Dave @ Redline Motorsport

these guys regulary 'build' engines, so would know what would suit a boosted B18C

(might not give you their *secret* 'building' tips, buit a good bit of advice at least...)

If you are using aftermarket rods... do what all "decent" builders do.. Clay it with plastigage for clearence... that is the only way to get it right.

from my understanding, you would need to clay the F@#CKer... then either get your new bearing custom machined to fit or buy different bearings that fit.

ACL race bearings only come in limited sizes and its almost always a must for them to be machined to get it perfect.. Else oem comes in a larger size range, but its also more expensive..

Going to pick up my block from Adrian now so ill see what he recomends. Ive already clayed/plastigauged with yellow oem bearings and im 0.0015" across the board. Looks more than likeley ill be using pinks to get slightly more clearance.. but ill see what adrian reckons.
