    Oil Filter Relocation

Has any one done an oil filter relocation to above the engine with mods such as oil cooler and braided oil lines? I've seen it in a recent Hot4's mag and thought it was a interesting modification as it allows easier access to oil filter changes instead of crawling underneath the car etc. However are there down sides to this? The position of the oil filter was obviously above the engine and oil cooler.

i am thinknig about this in the future, just to make it easier to reach the filter. But i been advide it can lose some pressure in the oil.... Gotta do some research later me thinks!

Either way you need to get under the car for the drain bolt. Not that much harder to do oil filter while under there.

The filter location is alot harder to access in the k20 compared to your b18.

Well.....it gets difficult when you have back problems etc due to all the movement. Also with draining oil, you do not necessarily need to jack the car up etc.

if you have back problems, a remote filter ain't gonna help you much...

(if that is helpful information for you)

plus you will lose oil pressure in doing this modification...

I am with this guy. You are adding many points of failure and reducing oil pressure to the engine for convenience sake. I would not do this on my car.

Tink and Tom, what are your thoughts on adding an oil cooler? Or are there more reliable ways to add cooling efficiency (given the loss in oil pressure and more points of failure of an oil cooler)?

Just thinking for the future as I'm wanting to start hitting the track.

Sorry to the OP for the thread jack. I'll start a new thread if preferred.

The oil filter relocation was just a thought. Had a feeling it was gonna lower oil pressure substantially but wasn't sure enough to be dentrimental. Would love to see some statistical data as to how much pressure is loss with oil coolers though.

Norm - drop is around 5-10psi on a single 19 row cooler and 3m of lines for B18C

add another 5-10 psi if you add a relocation...

will be similar for a K series... but you can modify the pump... for your intended reasoning 'for convenience' it is certainly not worth doing IMO...

                    ---

MRK20A - oil cooler is potentially essential for proper track racing and the oil pressure drop is dealt with by using modified oil pump.

the benefits of improved thermal control over oil far outweigh the 'points of failure' issue.

but i have seen some v.dodgey (and destructive) oil cooler installs as well - plan it properly and research how to route it best, and buy 'appropriate parts'

Tink is right (as always (ahem not))

Down sides, loss of oil pressure supplied to engine. Bigger the cooler, longer the pipes, more pressure loss. Relocation filter setups have generally longer hoses and mount block, so more pressure loss. If hoses are not sized correctly more pressure loss again.

Interesting how they post something like that on the Hot4's mag which isn't practical at all then haha. But who knows what other mods those guys are running, maybe to counter the loss in oil pressure.

they should have at least mentioned it was an issue Norm

Mhmhm..they didn't really mention it in the mag at all. I think it was more focused on like bling and show than practicality if there is such word haha!.

well, generally speaking, not many engines spend a lot of time above 8000rpm, so they wont be as sensitive to the potential oil pressure drop from installing an oil cooler. Whereas our Honda engines sing at 8000+ so its a side affect that will affect us more than most.
