what is the difference between the dohc v-tec and the i-vtec?

90s vintage VTEC basically allows the engine to have two discrete cam profiles for both intake and exhaust and the ability to switch between the two (VTEC kicking in ). A more conservative profile with less lift and duration for lower revs and an aggressive profile for high rev power.

i-VTEC has this but also adds the ability to dynamically alter the cam timing on the inlet cam (pretty sure it is only on inlet on the K series but i may be wrong).

I guess most would consider i-VTEC to be superior but it is also more complex.

Yep, as per ChargeR's comments. iVTEC allows adavncement of between 25 and 50 degrees on the intake cam, and to quote wikipedia "Phasing is determined by a combination of engine load and rpm, ranging from fully retarded at idle to somewhat advanced at full throttle and low rpm. The effect is further optimization of torque output, especially at low and midrange RPM."
