Flywheel on dc5r?

Hi guys...

with changing to a light weight flywheel ...I heard that when it comes to driving a full car load or uphill climb...you lose power. is this true?

From my experience, of going to lighter flywheel.

I don't think you lose power or torque for the matter.

With a lightened flywheel you are able to rev up the engine more quickly and slow down the engine rev's quicker too.

However with a lightened flywwheel you have to keep the rev's up or have increased power to keep it maintained steadily compared to a stock or heavier flywheel as the inertia from a heavier flywheel can maintain its speed or momentum more easily compared to a lightened wheel .

Power should be the same from what I've been told, however its just how quickly the power is delivered from the engine to the flywheel etc , reason for why people think you lose power is because of what I said above, the momentum in the flywheel does not sustain as long as a heavy one so you think you lose power.

Think of it as a heavy rock rolling compared to a lighter one, the heavier one will roll more further due to its weight/mass.
And a heavier rock will take longer or more effort to slow down.

Same relation to a heavy flywheel.


Just think of it as less mass/weight for the engine to turn to get the car moving or slowing down.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

A lighter flywheel will have less mass and hence less momentum as it spins. This will make it easier for the flywheel and hence the entire drive-line and car to accelerate and decelerate, although I think the angular momentum of the flywheel is insignificant compared to the momentum of the entire car.

This means that unless you are relying on the momentum of the flywheel to get you up hills, if for example you let off the throttle as you reach the start of an incline, there will be no noticeable difference in your cars pulling power up hills. In theory it should accelerate up hills more easily as less power is required to accelerate the flywheel.

So no it is not true, your car will not lose any hill climbing ability.

Wrong.

AUDM flywheel is 7.6kg while JDM flywheel is 4.1kg

Which is why so many AUDM DC5Rs change to the JDM flywheel as it would be pretty pointless changing flywheel and only saving 0.6 kgs.

Sorry a bit off topic, but how much does changing a flywheel cost on average?
Ive heard its quite a big bill cause it takes so long.

If you are serious about it, do it when you change your clutch, its about a 6-8 hour job.
