An issue that has been discussed numerous times on this forum and many other Honda forums is the notchy 3rd gear in the DC5S. The DC5R also has a similar problem with 2nd gear.

After some research and discussion I decided to get the aluminum shifter bushing and cable set from the US to try and solve the 3rd gear problem I was having.
They took about 2 week to arrive and the build quality was excellent.
The shifter cable bushings were the first to go in about 2 weeks ago. Install was quick and easy.
Stock Bushings;
First impressions were not as good as I hoped. The increased stiffness of 1st and 2nd gear made it very difficult to change gears whilst driving and later I discovered that it was almost impossible to go into reverse gear. I believe my short shifter had a role in this because another member had installed these bushings and his gear changes were nowhere near as stiff. 250km later the bushings had settled in and it was much easier to shift through the gears. They improved the shift feel and are much more direct then the stock rubber bushings. In terms of solving the 3rd gear- it didn’t . It was still happening frequently.
After 2 weeks of driving around with these bushings I was tempted to return back to the stock rubber bushings because I didn’t see any benefit except the added stiffness whilst changing gears. I decided to give the shifter bushings under the console a go to see if they would complement the cable bushings. After taking the center compartment apart and fiddling with the shifter box Wayne and I were very skeptical about these bushings. The stock rubber bushings were very stiff already and the shifter box didn’t have any noticeable flex or give whatsoever. We went ahead anyway and after an hour of pulling everything apart (by far the hardest part of the install) the bushings were in. (DIY here)
Stock parts;
We went for a test drive immediately and first impressions were excellent. I was incredibly surprised how much of a difference this had made to the smoothness of my gear changes. 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gear changes would go straight in and there was very little ‘play’ or notchiness.
Overall I’m very happy with this modification and would recommend it to those who cannot stand the grinding/notchy 3rd gear of the DC5S. Hopefully someone can try it on the DC5R to see if it will help with the 2nd gear problem.
Special thanks go to Mario, Wayne and Tian. Also Mugsee for guiding me to this site….
