    Importing a JDM ITR.

Hey guys. Im just wondering if anyone has had any experience with importing a jdm type R from japan.

Im thinking about using ProstegeMotorsport to import a JDM to australia.

Does anyone know the average costs to import one? Say if the JDM itr is around 15k AUD in a Japanese Auction. what would the total cost be to get it on the road in Australia.

    Thank you.

to import any JDM ITR, you have 2 options.

    1. personal import - own the car and use it overseas for at least 12 months;

    2. have a relevant CAMS licence - import the car as a race car.

average cost to import includes FOB fee in japan, shipping cost, stamp duty and custom clearance cost, compliance. plus other costs to rego in your state.

depends on the price in japan, it'll probably be at least 6k+.

      Spot on.

      1. And with the cost of living in Japan for a year, well that's just a silly way of getting a DC5R.

      2. Race use only limits 99% of buyers here.

The Aussie DC5R is easy to modify to better than JDM. You can get EP3 big brake kits from aftermarket suppliers, suspension is everywhere to choose from, and a KPro and I/H/E pushes you way beyond the power output of the JDM K20 in the DC5 and you still have a salable car when it comes to resale time.

Thanks for the replies guys. Forgot to mention that I was after a DC2R.

Also thought that Car importing companies in Australia buy the car for you in Japan and send it over for compliance and customs etc.

Why would you import a DC2 anyway? They're almost identical. I think due to parallel import laws you can't bring them here anyway. Alot of the JDM fronted DC2s on here are AUDM with JDM front ends.

dc2r was sold here so cant be imported here "normally" like they do with skylines and supras etc etc... its possible but quite expensive.

yes but not all cars will be granted import approvals.

without it, u can't even clear customs. and you have 2 choices if you import a car without an approval: ship it out + pay a fine or have the car crushed and pay a fine (this is the rules anyway, in practice it doesn't always work like that, there are cars sitting at custom brokers place for years.....).

As everyone has already said you can't import JDM dc2rs under the SEVS system.

An alternative is to find a friend in New Zealand and get them to buy you a JDM car and personally import it after a year. They are pretty cheap over there.
