"To be legal for use on public roads Australia, passenger car tyres must comply with at least one of the following standards:
                1. U.S.A. - indicated by "DOT" marking,
                2. European - indicated by "E" marking, or
                3. Japanese Industry - indicated by "JIS" marking.
Some tyres have all three of the markings mentioned above. To be legal for use on public roads Australia, tyres need to have at least one of these markings. Therefore, tyres can be legal for use on public roads in Australia and not have "DOT" markings.

The legality issues with the tyre / wheel combination you purchase in the US will relate to the vehicle you intend to fit them to. You will need to ensure that the wheel / tyre combination you purchase meets the regulations for alternative tyres & wheels applicable to your state or territory. There is a list of these on the Toyo website in the Technical Bulletins section. One regulation that applies in all states relates to the minimum load index. The load index on the tyres you intend to fit to your vehicle must have at least the minimum load index stated on the tyre placard affixed to your vehicle.

                Regards,

                Stephen Burke,
                Tyre Technical Officer,
                Motor Sport Liaison Officer,
Toyo Tyre & Rubber Australia Limited."

I must say I'm not 100% sure about the JIS markings - I've had conflicting information.

                  1) A senior guy from Bridgestone HQ told me that on the US 'DOT' and Eurpoean 'E' are accepted as ADR (2 years ago) but no mention of "JIS"
                  2) Many compliancing places still replace the tyres for the ADR compliancing (why not just keep the tyres if they've got JIS like I'm sure 99% of the passenger tyres in Japan?)
                  see: http://www.prestigemotorsport.com.au...rticle.php?t=9

                  However:
                  1) This conflicts with the stock AUDM IX tyres which dont have the DOT or E but a JIS circle.
                  2) This confilcts with the info provided from Toyo above
                  3) The RACV seems to think that there's not strict regulations:
                  http://www.racv.com.au/wps/wcm/conne...uipment/tyres/

In the past I've found no 'black and white' rules about what exactly makes an imported tyre road legal just from looking at it.

                  This is from http://forums.performanceforums.com/...php?t=67224560

I've just had a quick look at last years - 2006 ADR CD-ROM

Tyres are covered by ADR 23/00 and 23/01 (there may be more). Both of these standards cover about 20 pages of tests and specifications which the tyre must comply with. The actual "labelling requirements" aren't that stringent and there are only 12 requirements (that I could find from a quick glance).

There are no requirements for their to be any DOT or ADR marking, or any mark which an adverage Joe would immediately recognise as being a "compliant tyre". Probably due to the international nature of manufacturing nowadays.

Will probably be a step above RE-01R. The RE070 is very similar to the RE01R in terms of performance and since the RE11 is supposed to be better (and is the flagship tyre replacement) will be better..... I wonder if they will release a RE11R?
