    Safety Harnesses

Thought I would start a thread about this.

As posted by Ed (Fueltank) on another thread, a very good source to start from for mounting points.

    http://www.camsmanual.com.au/pdf/gen...20i%20q407.pdf

Basically confirms that mounting your 4pt harness on your OEM seat belt points (front and rear) are fine by CAMS standard.

But in concern to my question about harnesses and your car rolling over in case of accident (touch wood) will you be screwed as your head/you in general will have no room to move as your roof crushes in.

Initially I have read that this is only so if you have a 6pt harness but after readin the above pdf's diagram of a 6pt vs 4pt I realise there is no difference in the head area restraint. That the extra two mounting points are really in legs area. So I guess this is a warning to all those who use harnesses without a rollcage, unless this point can be proven otherwise (which I would greatly welcome! )

i would not wear a 4/5/6pt harness on the road in an uncaged car,

but i would on the race track...

We really talking about track events and etc.

As it is jsut stupid to wear it on normal roads as you can't even do head checks.

my racign seat would be crushed too, as would an OEM one... so you crush where the seat crushes...

the seat doenst punch a hole in the roof and just the roof crushes your body... the seat is involved too, and you are straped to the seat...

comon guys - lets try to visualise this?

maybe i have put too positive spin in my mind - due to racing with a 3pt harness - but what do you guys think?

what would happen if the car rolls at high speed on the track? and you are straped hard to a seat with a helmet on?

          what abou the airbag?

If you're strapped to your seat I don't think you head/face will even touch the air bag itself.

it is however arguable that the harness might actually prevent your head from hitting the roof?

Becuase yes the seat belts secure you to the seat, but in the event of a roll over what does your body usually do? in that case it is possible that your body might actually lift *or rather drop* from the seat and meet with the crushing roof, in this instance better to have the seat belt holding u down?

of course all speculation but it seems logical to me in some ways.......

I think you'll be somewhat safe in a race environment (helmet on) and it rolls.
The forces are not entirely focusing on your roof. You do have A B & C pillars.

Modern cars, such as DC5s and maybe DC2s , have very beefy A and B pillars for just this purpose. Does not do much for visibility though.

I personally have purchased a 4 point harness for track use and I feel okay about mounting them as mentioned by Temp even though I have no rollover protection. For my street/track car I would much prefer a four point roll bar welded in with a harness bar, which is a compromise of safety on track and street legality (at least where I am from a half cage is street legal).

I guess it is a tradeoff between being held in your seat firmly, which one would assume will make for better performance in horizontal impacts with solid objects from any direction, and being susceptible to rollover.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I see harnesses with expiry dates on them? do you throw away the old harness and buy new ones when they expire? my friend's got a set of willans sitting in his series 8 rx7, but the expiry date says 2003 august

Yes you throw them away. Your friend wouldn't pass scrutineering for a track event with that harness.

If I change the nut behind the wheel then my sloppy lines improve and I can get some consistency to sort out my iffy handling, my worrying lack of braking ability goes away, after that I can start fretting about my suspicious lack of straight line grunt.

I thought those dates only apply for racing series?

yeah....for private trackdays you can still use them....of coz depends on the organiser.....not for race meet tho.....
I agree with jing.....and for the 3 inch model you get quick release.....which is not hard to take the belts off......nun-like the 2 inch still using normal street lock...
