My wife and I flew from Brizzy to Melbourne for an R last year.
Flew down and drove back up. Mind you, this was for a 99 R with jus over 10k kms on it.
You just need to be carfull when going such a distance. We had a plan B, if the car was crap then we were just going to hire a car and visit family comming up the coast.
The car was 'as expected' so we enjoyed the drive back to Qld visiting family on the way.
Sometimes you need to go interstate to get the good deal that your after.
Personally, I wouldn't bother unless it was dirt cheap or something. You can get DC2's for the same kinda price in Sydney.
A friend of mine is selling hers since she wants a bike. She isn't too sure how much it is worth but I can tell you it has been taken care of properly.
a) You dont need a return ticket - if you fly up to inspect, ud wanna be pretty darn sure that you're gonna be driving back in the car.
b) 2 single adult tickets to Cairns from Syd (just checked on the Virgin Blue website) = ~$538
